FAMILY PROMISE UPDATES

Our 2nd Annual Dream Walk is coming up and we hope you will join us is support of our Mission.   Our first Dream Walk in 2017 was such a success that we were able to expand our programs and serve many more children and their families in need.
* Since inception in October of 2015 with our Bridge Housing Program, we have sheltered 41 families (137 people, 82 of those children).  87% of those entered stable housing after completing the program and 74% remained housed at our 6 month check point.
*Because of our success with the Dream Walk in 2017, we moved forward with creating the Open Doors Program to serve those clients on our waiting list for our Bridge Housing Program.  Through the Open Doors Program which started serving clients this year, we have assisted another 32 families (103 people, 58 of those children) in securing resources for stable housing.  For 26 of those families who needed it, we were able to provide short-term emergency shelter in a hotel while they were assessed and referrals were made to get them additional help.

Please follow the following link to Register to Walk, Become a Team Captain or to Sponsor the Event.  Individual Sponsorships are available.  Simply click on Participate  or Donate, or scroll down to the bottom of the page to download forms.  Thank you for all your support and we look forward to Walking with all of you.

COORDINATOR CORNER

My husband and I moved to Florida from Long Island 4 years ago. I had always worked professionally in the Not-For-Profit sector, with my last position being Director of Patient Services with The American Cancer Society. When I moved to Florida I held the intention that I would find the best place(s) to share the time and skill set that I had, and when my husband and I found Unity Church of Venice we found our spiritual home.  I had worked in partnership with many organizations, groups and managed many volunteers. I was aware of Family Promise and did see that there was a newly opened office in Venice.  Coincidentally, at the same time our Minister was looking to expand Unity's Outreach Program. On the day I went to talk to our Minister, Rev. Robin Reiter about how I might serve at the Church at the same time she had made the decision to move forward that week with our Church participation in Family Promise! She had planned to announce this at the next Sunday Service and also recruit a Program Coordinator! So the rest is history!  We were the 13th Church added to those already serving the Program. Our Church has embraced the Program, as has our Board of Trustees, the Congregation and our Minister. Volunteers have been incredibly generous with their time, talents, prayers and financial support to make our Program fit the needs of the guests we host. One of our Churches' goals is to "uplift the surrounding community by offering hope and peace."  What better way to do that then to share our Church home with those that are experiencing such a challenging time in their lives? Our volunteers have felt that they have received much more than they have given. Some feedback we received from our volunteers like " serving makes you a little more humble, it feels good to help, by helping other families I became part of a larger, extended family and met a need I didn't know I had " shows how meaningful the experience has been. We have seen some amazing transformations in the families that have come through the Program and come out the other side to have a brand new life for themselves because of the support of Family Promise staff and the Churches and volunteers. Family Promise has brought people together in our Church, some who did not know each other before volunteering for the Program. Unity teachings include the fact that "Jesus welcomed everyone to the table". Our experience has been that helping our neighbors and "welcoming them to our table at Unity of Venice Church has benefited all of us, including our  guests, our Church, and our community in our mission to offer hope and heal more lives!
