For World Trade Center, an Action-Packed Fall Agenda | George Kearns, chairman & CEO of MCC Worldwide and acting chair of the WTC Delaware board of directors, speaks to the Ghanaian representatives about Delaware's strength in incorporation. |
As Americans, we observe several new years. We are all familiar with the globally observed January 1. The state of Delaware’s fiscal year begins on July 1. The U.S. government’s fiscal year begins on October 1. And for school students, their parents, and faculty, the school year begins in September. For most of us, September means a return to regular work after a summer break. It is no different at World Trade Center Delaware, although here, activity never seems to stop at all.
Already this month we hosted a day-long introduction to Delaware for a delegation of business owners from Ghana led by the Minister for Transport, Hon. Kwaku Ofori-Asiamah, and the CEO of the Ghana Investment Promotion Center, Mr. Reginald Yoofi Grant. Many thanks are due to Nesrin Cakiroglu, who worked tirelessly to organize the program and arrange the breakfast and luncheon. Board Members Mohamed Cisse and George Kearns, and Tony Pu of the U.S. Commercial Service, assisted her with the execution of the program.
Thanks also to the many speakers from the University of Delaware, the State of Delaware Department of Transportation, Foreign Trade Zone 99, WILMPACO, and the companies Aqua Science, Batta Environmental Associates, Bloom Energy, and Convergence Public Affairs. Please click to see a copy of the program and speaker biographies. See story, below.
Protect Your Data
Last week, the Federal Trade Commission warned about the “consequences of loose use of consumers’ confidential data.” This applies to companies as well. On October 12, we are partnering with the U.S. Commercial Service to present the webinar “Protecting Your Business Interests, Corporate Espionage, Global Security & Compliance.” Speakers from the State Department, the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, Homeland Security, Bureau of Industry & Security, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency will tell you how to protect your valuable products, equipment, and trade secrets overseas and how to minimize exposure, liability, and risk. This is one webinar you won’t want to miss.
International Delaware deadline is October 17

Contact Holli Muffler for more information –holli.muffler@todaymediacustom.com or 302-729-2907. Act fast! The advertising deadline is October 17.
Gala is November 2
This message would not be complete without mention of our Annual Gala on November 2. The venue this year is the Deerfield Golf Club in Newark. I am looking forward to an evening of festivities celebrating the achievements of our international business community. This year, our theme is Ireland. The Delaware-Irish ties go back to the first Irish immigrants in the 1600s. Today, almost 15% of the Delaware population can claim Irish heritage. Ireland is also an important business partner. So, dress in your fancy clothes and prepare to sparkle to the tune of bagpipe and song. Register here for tickets and sponsorships.

Ghana leaders visit Delaware on B2B trade mission | |
Ghana is called the center of the world – latitude and longitude zero – and the country’s leaders want to make it the center of U.S. East Coast trade as well.
“We have quite an attractive investment universe, we have an attractive business environment relative to the rest of the continent,” said Reginald Yofi Grant, CEO of the Ghana Investment Promotion Center.
Ghanaian representatives recently visited the U.S. and Delaware as part of a trade mission allied with the U.S.-Ghana Business Expo in Philadelphia, sponsored by the U.S.-Ghana Chamber of Commerce. They sat down with World Trade Center Delaware for a conversation after visiting the STAR Campus and meeting with state officials.
“We have an all-embracing and all-engaging policy,” said Ghana Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori-Asiamah. “We don’t really look east or west, north or south, we look forward.” He noted Ghana is headquarters of the African Continental Free Trade area and is spearheading progress toward African industrialization.
Grant said Ghana exports products including cocoa beans and gold, but also has cultural ties from Ghanaians who have gone to school here and returned home to work in government and industry. It also imports “quite a lot” of poultry from Delaware and the East Coast. “We have very good relationships which we can only expand for a better future,” he said.
Delaware business owners looking to export to Ghana should know that its people stand ready to welcome them, Grant said. “For a lot of the businesspeople in Delaware, we see great opportunity in Ghana. ... We are already looking to have trade missions both ways.
“There is a lot that we can do together for the growth of the global economy.”

Registration is now open for the World Trade Center Delaware 2023 Gala, “A Celebration of Ireland and Delaware,” on November 2. Sponsorships are also available by contacting info@wtcde.com.
The event will celebrate the international business community’s achievements and commemorate the ties between Delaware and Ireland, going back to the early 1600s when the first Irish immigrants settled in Delaware. Between the 1820s and 1850s, which included the Irish potato famine, the du Pont company is estimated to have helped more than 1,500 people emigrate from Ireland. Honoring that legacy, and the modern ties between our manufacturing, biotech, and financial industries, this year’s Gala will feature bagpipes and Irish dancers.
The Gala, which supports World Trade Center Delaware’s paid internship program, will take place Thursday, November 2, beginning with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. It will be held at the Deerfield Golf Club, Newark.
The evening’s honorees will include:
-
Champion of Trade, Kurt Foreman, President and CEO of the Delaware Prosperity Partnership
-
International Humanitarian, Rotary Club of Wilmington and Margi Pruitt, Ukraine Project Leader
-
Small Business International Innovator, SiVad Group, Lenzie Davis, CEO
