Remember It All Comes Down to the Power of One
|
Dear #UtahRotary,
We have just completed our first two months of the Rotary year. Your club presidents should be settling into the groove now and hopefully your club has clearly identified and defined strategies for accomplishing the Power of One Campaign.
If your club has not discussed this yet or you do not know what your club strategies are for accomplishing the Power of One Campaign, please reach out to your club President and ask that this be discussed ASAP.
I have begun my club visits and I am blown away by the passion, excitement, and dedication of the Utah Rotarians I have had the honor of meeting so far. We are truly blessed to live in such a great state and associate with such amazing people. #UtahRotary is made up of true People of Action. And when People of Action come together, there is no limit to what they can accomplish. They will even eradicate polio!
On September 9th we will have the opportunity to gather at the #UtahRotary All-Clubs Black Tie & Boots gala. I would love to see all of you there. I realize this will not be possible but it sure would be great. We are going to celebrate #UtahRotary, we are going to highlight what some of our clubs are doing for the 9/11 National Day of Service and, we will here from our new Rotary International Director, Dan Himelspach.
This will be an opportunity for your club to complete the engagement aspect of the Power of One Campaign and more importantly an opportunity for you to associate with other Utah Rotarians and enjoy a great evening.
As always, let me say thank you. Thank you for all that you are doing to Create Hope in the World. Remember it all comes down to the Power of One.

The Power of Personally Recruiting One New Member/Year
It is imperative for Utah Rotary District 5420 club members to actively recruit one new member each year as Rotary, at its core, thrives on collective service-driven efforts.
By expanding our membership annually, we fortify our ability to undertake impactful service projects that benefit communities across Utah and beyond.
As we embrace the principle of Service Above Self, increasing our ranks ensures a sustainable reservoir of passionate individuals committed to the Rotary mission.
Therefore, making recruitment a high priority this year and encouraging everyone to partake in member recruitment endeavors not only bolsters our organization but also magnifies our capacity to make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.

A Letter from Mark Merriam, District Governor, 2023-24
Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu
Aloha
Today, August 9, has been a tragic day for our Rotarians, families and friends on the Island of Maui. The fires across the island have changed lives forever. Truly devastating. Our sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted.
As people of action, we can take immediate action. As we come together to recover and rebuild, we need to support each other. We need to Create Hope for Maui.
Through our Rotary District 5000 Foundation, a relief fund has been established. Foundation President Dave Hamil and Treasurer Sharon Amano will handle all donations. The Rotary District 5000 Foundation is a 501c3 organization and all donations are considered charitable.
A committee will be organized shortly to find the greatest needs for distribution of monies. Monies will be used to make the largest impact based on needs and will be sustainable. A single fund will be the most helpful over time to provide the greatest significant benefits.
Please also widely share this opportunity to help. Contact me anytime for additional information.
Stay safe, take care and mahalo as we Create Hope for Maui.

Why I Quit Rotary
I have been a member of Rotary twice, but a member of only one club. I joined Rotary at the invitation of a good neighbor. At first, the association with other good men and women with the opportunity to learn new things was sufficient to keep me active. I contributed a few dollars to eradicate polio and felt like I was “doing good”. After a time, another opportunity came to help my community and as I had no particular responsibility in the club: I quit Rotary.
My situation changed a few years later. Another good neighbor, again, asked me a number of times to come back to Rotary. It was enjoyable the first time, but I felt no commitment and not really needed. After a number of invitations, I decided to come back.
I was amazed to discover they were still talking about one of the same community projects and how to get it going. Maybe I felt more comfortable the second time as a member, but this time I did not wait for a responsibility to be given me. Instead, I took the lead on the languishing project and with the help of many completed it. In doing so, I learned two important motivational principles.
Number one, everyone needs to feel needed.
Number two, accomplishing good motivates us to do more.
The Foundation has now motivated me to continue “to do good” for the last thirty years as a member of Rotary for the second time.
Do you want to feel needed?
Take on a project, a grant or a mentorship. Rotary is a great place to do it. Commit to support the Rotary Foundation. Governor Redd has asked us each to contribute just one dollar more than our largest donation. Feel needed. Feel the motivation that comes from truly “doing good in the world.”

The Rotary Foundation
Annual Fund
What Is It?
The Annual Fund is the main funding source for Foundation programs such as district and global grants. Fifty percent (50%) of everything we give to the Rotary Foundation comes back after three years as district designated funds to support these programs. That's one reason we like to call it "our foundation" because it is largely member funded. I
n 2021-2022, the annual fund provided 478 district grants, 207 disaster response grants and 1,199 global grants totaling $110 million.
You can give to the Rotary Foundation knowing that over 90% goes to program awards and operations, earning a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator.
You can also give to the effort to end Polio which is now endemic to only Afghanistan and Pakistan. Every dollar donated is matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
There are many ways you can give. The simplest is to sign up for Rotary Direct where you can make a one-time or recurring donation. Some clubs also invoice members for voluntary contributions to TRF. Check with your club foundation chair and they can help you.
Your district Annual Fund Sub-committee is a resource to help you meet and/or increase your club's giving goals to The Rotary Foundation. Over the rest of the year, we'll be exploring different topics to help you gain a better understanding.
As one Past District Governor once said, "Give until it feels good!"
Scott Florence
Annual Fund Sub-Committee Chair

What Will You Do on World Polio Day?
World Polio Day on Tuesday, October 24 is a day set aside for Rotary members, public health advocates, and all who want a world free from polio to come together, recognize our progress in the fight to end polio, and talk about the actions we need to take to end polio finally and forever.
What will your club do to commemorate World Polio Day?
Will you throw your club president out of an airplane or another – but equally significant - event to highlight Rotary’s progress in eradicating only the 2nd human disease in history (after small pox)? Host a concert? A walk, ride, run or cycling event? Flood your local media – social and otherwise – with the good news about how close we are to the endgame in this 35+ year fight? Create a “Raise for Rotary” online fundraiser? Write a letter to the editor of your local paper? Sign up 100% of your club members for the Polio Plus Society? Or something even “bigger, better and bolder?”
Let’s not let October 24 go by without letting our communities know how close we are to making polio “ancient history!” Find logos, photos, videos, and other resources in RI’s Brand Center … or on the EndPolioNow.org website.
There’s still time to plan something interesting, informative, and fun!
Linda Sappington
Past District Governor, 2021-2022

RI Convention in Singapore
May 25-29, 2024
Singapore's first prime minister became known as the "Chief Gardener" for his vision of the city's green future. Today, the merging of nature and ultra-modern cityscape is an example of the 2024 Rotary Convention city's frequent self-reinvention. Check out the September issue of Rotary magazine to find out why Singapore's shape-shifting is key to its success. Register for the convention and experience it for yourself.

Park City Sunrise Rotarians, their families and friends enjoyed an evening train ride on the Heber Valley Railroad. After a box dinner by Done to Your Taste Catering, caterer to the rich and famous including us, they marveled at the scenery along the Wasatch Mountains and Deer Creek Reservoir.
The club also provided meals for 40 teens at the homeless youth facility of Volunteers of America. This monthly activity involves a dozen Rotarians who make a nutritious meal and serve it at the Salt Lake VOA teen shelter.

The Cedar City Rotary Club focused on fellowship in August, culminating in a “Pastabilities of Rotary” dinner. For this dinner, each member was encouraged to bring a guest so they could meet other Rotarians and learn about the amazing things this organization does. Mix-and-mingle games allowed everyone to get to know each other better, and four of the guests are now prospective members. We had a great time, and are always excited for the opportunity to share Rotary with others!
St. George Rotary Club’s August began with a visit from DG John Redd, his first club presentation in RY2023-24. Mid-month, we celebrated the restoration of the firepit at Worthen Park – originally built in1948 by long ago St. George Rotarians – with a potluck lunch (like early Rotarians would have had 75 years ago) and a short speech by St. George City mayor followed by the placement of a new brass plaque recognizing Rotary’s 2023 efforts to preserve this history. The same evening the community was invited to a club-hosted “Cookies with Candidates” event to hear from many of 18 running for a spot on the St. George City Council.

Rotary International Youth Exchange Students! Bountiful Rotary Club welcomed our student from Mexico and sends off one of our students to Austria.
What an adventure for them, their host families, and the opportunity to create peace and goodwill to all those around them. Good Luck!
District Governor John Redd gave his "home club" an incredible presentation and we also helped assemble the Turtle Shelter's warm vests for the homeless.
It's been a great month!

The Murray Rotary Club served more than 1000 pancake w/ sausage and drink breakfasts from sunrise to start time of the Murray July 4th parade. This yearly event raises funds for club service projects. Thirty hard-working Rotarians made this event happen by rising early and staying late. In August Murray Rotary organized a Blood Drive with the American Red Cross. With a dozen Rotarians and half a dozen volunteers who signed up through 'Just Serve', the blood drive helped fill a critical late summer shortage of blood for area hospitals.
The Richfield Rotary Club made several donations for Snow College Scholarships—hole sponsor to Snow Richfield wrestling golf tournament on September 8 in Richfield and the Snow Alumni golf tournament, September 12 at Oak Ridge in Sandy. We also donated $4000 to the Snow Richfield Scholarship Dinner on September 27th at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

New Executive Director Will Craven told members of the Washington City Rotary Club the St. George Children’s Museum in Southern Utah is better than it’s ever been and will be expanding even more over the coming months.
The museum provides an exceptional learning experience through play for all children who walk through its doors to frolic with dinosaurs or enjoy other exhibits that provide interactive activities for the youngsters.
Craven says some displays are being enhanced and other exciting exhibits are in the works including a robotics club and an innovative intergalactic experience that is out of this world. Craven previously served as the interactive exhibit designer and has been the creative force behind the museum’s development and now expansion.

The Holladay Rotary Club participated in three community events in the last month. The Junior League of Salt Lake organized a successful Community Assistance and Resource Event (CARE) Fair at West High School, held on July 28 and 29. This event provided healthcare assistance to many individuals, raising awareness about local available resources. Club members also lent their support to the Universal Closet annual event at South Davis Junior High School in Bountiful, which also benefits our goal to organize a winter coat drive for kids later this year. We rounded off the month supporting the popular Blue Moon Festival on August 26 where club members contributed their time to make the event a success.

What happens when three Rotary Clubs rally on the airwaves to raise money for a beloved radio station? The Park City Rotary Club, Park City Sunrise, and Park City Twilight raised $36,675! Volunteer Rotarians ended Park City’s KPCW Summer pledge drive with shout outs, laughter, and unabashed plugs for Rotary International and the local Rotary service projects. KPCW has been a valued media outlet in Park City for 30 years, providing news, emergency information, great music, and a fun place for volunteers to be DJs. Thousands of residents in Summit and Wasatch County answered the call because, like Rotarians, the NPR-affiliated station exists to serve.
The three clubs also collaborated on a cleanup of Park City's Rotary Park. A popular venue for weddings, birthdays and family gatherings, Rotary Park need a great deal of cleanup after the enormous snowy winter we had this year. A hearty lunch topped the event.

The Rotary Club of Lehi has established a second Rotary Park in Lehi City. The new park memorializes the late Steve Roll who was a vibrant member of the club. He passed away in December 2021, secondary to complications related to COVID. Steve volunteered for the Lehi City Planning Commission, economic development committee, and so many others that many referred to him as “Mr. Lehi.” Steve advocated the park’s creation on city property for many years. A Sorensen Foundation Grant, facilitated by the Murray Rotary Club and PDG Jose Velasco, enabled the Club to purchase trees and shrubs valued at $15,000. Upon Steve’s passing, the city recognized the urgency of creating this park to honor him. A grand opening ceremony is in the planning stages.
