My name is Antonio Negron-Diaz, and I’m a senior at the University of Central Florida majoring in environmental studies and pursuing an undergraduate certificate in geographic information systems (GIS). I began my role as an intern with the Orange County Environmental Protection Division (EPD) at the end of May 2025 and have been working closely with the Green PLACE program ever since.
My internship involves surveying properties, updating amenities and signage, and cataloging features through an inventory system. This hands-on experience has deepened my understanding of conservation beyond the classroom and has solidified my commitment to protecting natural areas. My most memorable experience was helping with the grand reopening of the Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge. As a former volunteer, returning in this new role felt like a full-circle moment. Seeing the refuge welcome the public again and witnessing its impact on wildlife and the community was incredibly rewarding. It has taught me how important outreach is in conservation and how programs like Green PLACE connect people to the natural world.
I’ve also had the chance to shadow the Lake Management and Water Sciences teams. With Lake Management, I helped survey the Butler Chain of Lakes for invasive species and assisted with herbicide treatment at Lake Olivia. With Water Sciences, I spent a day in the lab analyzing water samples for chlorophyll a. Although the lab was intimidating, the team was incredibly supportive and made the learning experience enjoyable. This internship has been one of the most rewarding parts of my academic journey. The Green PLACE staff welcomed me with open arms and created a space where I could learn and grow. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to continue supporting EPD’s conservation efforts.
