September 2018

Happy Labor Day!

We hope everyone had a fun-filled summer!

September is National Healthy Aging Month.  Researchers have discovered that people who feel younger actually have greater grey matter in key areas of the brain; study participants were found to score higher in memory tests than those who felt their chronological age.  Physical exercise, such as aerobics or biking, twice a week can help older adults improve their brain health.   Starting to feel your age? Turn back your biological clock this month -- evaluate your lifestyle habits and take steps to improve your brain health with exercise and brain healthy eating.  (For more tips, check out our article on healthy aging below.)

Reducing Pain & Inflammation Naturally

September is Pain Awareness Month -- a good reminder about the benefits of using non-drug methods for reducing pain and inflammation.

Redness, swelling and pain from a scraped knee or cut finger are the immediate signs of "acute" inflammation, nature's response to injury or an infection. While these sensations may be unpleasant, this response is beneficial as it helps bring blood to the injury or "ramp up" the immune system to promote healing.

Chronic inflammation -- when the immune system in a prolonged state of high alert -- is a dangerous health condition resulting from poor diet, excess weight, chemicals in the home/work environment, stress or food allergies. Digestive problems, fatigue, "brain fog," depression and/or high blood sugar levels are some internal signs of chronic inflammation; eczema, psoriasis, itchy/puffy eyes or face and belly fat are some common physical symptoms.

Reducing or eliminating highly inflammatory foods like sugars and grains are the first step in reducing your chronic pain. Following an anti-inflammatory diet filled with nutrient-dense, low calorie foods like fresh fruits and dark, leafy vegetables, omega-3 fatty acid rich fish like salmon and lean meats is a healthy lifestyle change that can reduce pain and inflammation.  An anti-inflammatory diet can provide a multitude of health benefits to your body as a whole. helping to keep weight in check and reducing the risk of heart disease, arthritis, dementia and cancer -- health issues that are typically rooted in high inflammation.

Acupuncture is an effective non-drug approach to helping the body heal naturally by activating the release of cortisol, a hormone known to reduce inflammation. According to Lori Fortunato, LAc, acupuncture is very effective in reducing overall inflammation, providing long-lasting relief of neck, back and muscular injuries, as well as headache, sciatica, anxiety, digestive disorders and other health conditions. This ancient healing technique is also thought to be beneficial in slowing the aging process by increasing metabolism and stabilizing blood sugar.

In addition to diet and acupuncture, another important step in healing from chronic inflammation is ridding your body of toxic chemicals. Switch to plant-based essential oils for your household cleaning and personal care products. Choosing pure, high quality oils, such as those in the Young Living line, can help reduce your toxic exposure to the hundreds of dangerous chemicals lurking in everyday products and help protect your family's health.

Healthy Aging with Chiropractic

September is Healthy Aging month, a time to celebrate longevity and to take steps to ensure that a long life is a healthy life.

Thanks to better information and advances in technology,  we are living longer than previous generations.  However, with longevity often comes the increased risk for Alzheimer's, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic health conditions.  Wear and tear over the years can often lead to d egeneration of the joints and the spine which can  impact nervous system function and increase the risk of falls.

Research shows that the brain begins to change 10 to 20 years before signs of cognitive decline begin to emerge.   Making lifestyle changes early on is your best bet to improving your health outcome.    Maintaining a positive attitude, eating healthy, sleeping soundly, staying physically and socially active are the "not-so-secret" secrets to healthy brain and body aging.  E xercising regularly can produce not only cardiovascular benefits, but can also go a long way in improving balance and gait and reducing the risk of falls, a leading cause of death for seniors.

Chiro practic care can be one of  your best non-drug options to support the aging process.  Regular adjustments can help to s low the progression of arthritis, relieve joint pain, reduce blood pressure  and help keep the spine and nervous system interference-free.  Our scope of practice addresses the patient as a whole, not just his or her musculoskeletal symptoms; using a wide range of gentle, non-invasive modalities, we can effectively address the multiple comorbidities many elderly patients often possess.

Make chiropractic a part of your healthcare plan ... so that you will shine in the golden years!  Call to schedule your appointment today: 631.265.1223.
