September 2019

September has arrived and that means it's Back- to-School time! Getting into a routine can be difficult after the free wheeling summer months.  Establishing a regular waking and sleeping schedule is key to transitioning into the new school year.  As chiropractors, we would be remiss if we didn't remind our patients about the importance of spinal health in children: unsupportive backpacks can put unnecessary strain on your child's spine, affecting posture and increasing the risk of a fall or injury.  When choosing a backpack, opt for one that is supportive, with two padded shoulder straps -- no one-shoulder messenger bags! When fully packed, be sure that your child's bag weighs no more than  10% of his/her bodyweight.  And, because September almost always brings back-to-school sniffles and sneezes, don't forget to send your child with hand sanitizer to ward off nasty germs! Young Living's Thieves purifier, made with essential oils, is an excellent, natural choice -- call our office to order a supply for your whole family!

With all the demands of the season ramping up, be sure to make time to take care of your own health needs so that you'll be able to support the loved ones in your life who are embarking on a new academic journey!  Don't be a stranger!

We wish all our students a very successful and fulfilling year, and to those observing the upcoming holidays, a very joyous celebration.

Yours in Health,

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds
Back to School Jitters:  Is it "Just Butterflies" or a More Serious Health Issue?

Neurofeedback for Anxiety
Nervous jitters about the new school year is quite common as September gets underway.   For most children, back-to-school butterflies fade as they gradually transition to new routines, activities and people.

For some, however, these worries can become debilitating, and may indicate a deeper issue. If you're noticing a consistent pattern of headaches, stomachaches, extreme meltdowns, crying episodes, phobias or oppositional behaviors,  they may actually be symptoms of an undiagnosed anxiety issue.

In people with anxiety, the body's natural fight or flight" response, an instinctual survival mechanism, is activated too easily and too frequently.  Panic attacks and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are some common conditions related to unmanaged anxiety.  In children with anxiety, new, unfamiliar or difficult situations are perceived by the brain as a potential threat; disruptive or aggressive behaviors in the classroom or at home are actually automatic "hardwired" responses from the brain, which perceives it's under attack.    Chronic anxiety places the brain and body in an unhealthy state of hyper vigilance causing physical symptoms such as stomachaches, queasiness and headaches; left untreated, chronic angst can lead to depression, substance abuse and other serious conditions.

Fortunately, there are effective, non-drug therapies to reign in anxiety such as cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, and neurofeedback therapy which we use with our patients to train the brain to overcome dysregulated brain-wave patterns that trigger anxiety.  Check out Dr. Chiappino's video above and then call our office to learn how to help your child overcome his/her anxiety to have a successful school year.  631.265.1223.
 Acupuncture for Knee Pain

Is an old sports injury affecting your quality of life?  Are your knees often stiff and swollen? Are you having knee surgery and concerned about opioids that are often prescribed for post-surgery pain?

Knee pain affects people of all ages, from the high school athlete to the weekend warrior.  Over-the-counter medications prescribed by doctors may help reduce pain and swelling, however the results are often temporary, and in the case of prescription painkillers, can be addictive and deadly.   Acupuncture offers a better alternative for knee pain, helping to
improve circulation, reduce swelling and inflammation associated with conditions likes arthritis, and reduce the need for postoperative painkillers.

If painful knees are stopping you in your tracks, contact our licensed acupuncturist Lori Fortunato, LAc.   She is highly experienced in using acupuncture treatments to alleviate knee pain.  Call 631.265.1223 to book your appointment.

Chiropractic Care  -- The Natural Choice for Pain Relief

September is Pain Awareness Month -- how often do you reach use over-the-counter (OTC) medications to alleviate pain?  Did you know that overuse of pain relievers like acetaminophen, which also show up in cold/allergy/sleep aid remedies,  causes nearly 50 percent of acute liver failures in the U.S.?

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), at least 20 percent of all Americans are living with chronic pain.   In addition to physical discomfort and reduced mobility, chronic pain affects the psyche, often triggering anxiety and depression, social withdrawal, and reduced quality of life.

In a time when the U.S. is fighting an opioid epidemic, chiropractic care shines as effective, natural alternative to prescription and OTC medications for a wide variety of health conditions including back pain, headache, temporomandibular joint pain, sciatica, "text neck" discomfort and sports injuries.   Gentle spinal adjustments not only relieve pain naturally, but help to improve the functioning of the body and enabling it to heal itself. For seniors, improvements in flexibility, balance and coordination that are achieved through chiropractic care are key to falls prevention. And for babies or children with recurring ear infections, chiropractic is a great natural option to antibiotics, OTC medications and invasive procedures.

Pain Awareness Month is a great opportunity to remind everyone that there are many effective alternative and complementary therapies available that don't include potentially damaging and addicting drugs.  Pain isn't something you have to live with. Come in for an adjustment, massage, yoga therapy or acupuncture treatment ... and start enjoying life again! 631.265.1223.
