Business of the Month

The business of the month is   K & W Projects. K & W does amazing wood working for individuals, businesses and military commands.  They provided the plaques for Toast to the Heroes and Chasing the Sun. They are always looking for ways to give back through their company and through volunteering. Let K & W Project make your vision a reality!

Volunteer of the Month

Krystopher Barnard

Kris was a dedicated volunteer while on summer break from Virginia Tech.  He spent hours of every day supporting Wounded Wear building kits, supporting retail operations and any other job that needed doing while also working at Dollar Tree. This 21 year old is truly an amazing young man, now back at school, starting his Senior year. We wish him the best of luck, and hope to see him next summer.

Wounded Wear Kit Update

Great News !!!!
Wounded Wear Kits are now designed so that an
individual may choose the items her or she would like in their personalized kit. Sometimes all the items available are chosen, other times, perhaps only 3 or 4 of the items are selected. The response has been very positive, and either way, we get to reach out to more and more Wounded Warriors as Wounded Wear continues to grow and expand our mission.

Requests are coming in at a steady pace. 46 in June, 50 in July, and were right on track for August. That translates to $44,400.00 in funds donated to Wounded Wear, have gone directly back to Wounded Warriors, including those from WW II, Korea, and Vietnam eras.

This is just one example of Wounded Wear making a difference in people's lives.

A local runner and Wounded Wear Board Member, Nancy Lacore, is training for a 160 mile run she calls Valor Run. It will be taking place October 12-18, in honor of the 159 U.S. military women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The primary purpose of this run is to honor and remember the women who lost their lives in defense of our country. Valor Run is also a fundraiser for two non-profit organizations: The Women in Military Service for America (WIMSA) Memorial and Wounded Wear.

Lacore developed the idea of Valor Run earlier this year after her first contact with both of the organizations for which she is fundraising. "I visited the Women's Memorial for the first time this past February," Lacore said. "I found myself paging through a book devoted to the stories of the women who died in Iraq and Afghanistan and realized that, even after 24 years in the Navy, and serving in Afghanistan, I had no idea how many women we had lost." Lacore also began volunteering with Wounded Wear, a local organization that serves combat wounded and families of the fallen. "I like to challenge myself physically and all these factors converged and became Valor Run."

Lacore is currently running close to 50 miles a week in preparation for Valor Run. She anticipates running nearly 60 miles a week by the end of her training. During Valor Run, she will run 25 miles a day in 6 cities: Norfolk/Virginia Beach area, Williamsburg, Richmond, Fredericksburg, Quantico, and Alexandria/D.C. She will finish the final 9 miles on day seven, ending the run at the Women's Memorial in Arlington.

"The planning has been a lot harder than the actual training," Lacore stated, "But I have a few great friends and a very supportive family, who are helping with that."

SOLitude Lake Management Uses Social Media Campaign to Donate to Wounded Wear

The SOLution, SOLitude Lake Management, an industry leader in lake and pond management, fisheries management and related environmental services for the Eastern United States, donated $8,290.00 to Wounded Wear.

SOLitude Lake Management launched a social media campaign to generate their donation to Wounded Wear.  For every new social media follower SOLitude received from July 1 to July 31, 2014, they allocated $10 to the total donation.  SOLitude Lake Management, their partners, and Wounded Wear promoted the campaign through their individual social media channels.

"We are thankful that our network, along with Wounded Wear's supporters, eagerly participated in this campaign to increase the overall donation.  Wounded Wear is an amazing organization and reaches out each day to 'create a better world' for our brave soldiers and their families.  We are appreciative of their service and proud to support their expanding mission, along with our nation's heroes," said Tracy King, Director of Marketing at SOLitude Lake Management.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the SOLitude Lake Management social media fundraiser!

Along with a new location, and our new Chief Operations Officer, Wounded Wear added several new governing Board members, and created an Advisory Board. The collective board brings a broad range of experience in leadership, business, fundraising and organizational management. To learn more about Wounded Wear's Board of Directors please visit Wounded Wear Board of Directors.

Wounded Wear mission is also expanding to address the non-visible scars of war and the high rate of suicide among veterans today with its new Pride-Power-Purpose-Peace model. Wounded Wear looks forward to further growth and development, while continuing to make a long-term impact that directly benefits combat-wounded warriors and Gold Star family members.
