Dear Friends of the KMA,

September marks the beginning of a particularly eventful fall season at the KMA! Wasting no time, things get started on September 1, the first day of Jane Cassidy: Drink up the Moon opens on September 1. This immersive video and sound installation is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. You don’t want to miss the chance to meet the artist and learn about her work on Thursday, September 21 at 5:30pm as part of the KMA’s Cocktails and Conversations series. Check out the Soundbath Meditation Workshops and other exhibition-related programming here.

Currents: Recent Art from East Tennessee and Beyond continues on the third floor directly across from Drink up the Moon.  This permanent installation features a rotation of the KMA’s growing collection of twenty-first-century art. Right now, you can enjoy several important new acquisitions, including Hank Willis Thomas’s monumental stainless-steel E Pluribus Unum.

Fall also brings the return of a full schedule of programs and classes, beginning with Second Sunday art activities the whole family can enjoy together on September 10. Additional classes and programs are listed below.

The KMA curatorial staff is in the final, intense throes of putting together a beautiful and ambitious color-illustrated publication in time for the November 3 opening of the new and expanded version of Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee.  Watch for your invitation to a very special members’ opening!  This month, the galleries on the main entry floor that will house the new installation are being outfitted with state-of-the-art lighting and a new wall configuration. We’re very excited that Higher Ground 2.0 will offer recorded cell phone audio tours in English and Spanish (with a version in English for visually impaired visitors) and a video tour in American Sign Language. We can’t wait to have the entire building open again and rediscover the artistic riches of our region!

The new Higher Ground will be my last big project as KMA executive director, so I’m understandably ambivalent about its impending completion. Things are progressing nicely on the search for my successor, and we are hoping to be able to make an announcement soon, so stay tuned!

I look forward to seeing you soon at the KMA. Thanks to your membership support, admission is free for everyone, and many programs and activities can be offered without charge.

Thank you!
