First Avenue Road Diet Nears Completion
Progress on the transformative transportation project continued through August

The First Avenue Road Diet is almost complete, but big improvements are still to come.  In response to the anticipated demand from commercial and residential development in Moore Park KOP, Upper Merion Township and King of Prussia District partnered on grant funding from PennDOT to construct better cycling and pedestrian facilities in this mixed-use neighborhood.

Studies done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have shown that biking to work has increased by 60% over the last decade and 29% of pedestrian respondents indicated they are walking more than in the previous year.  Sadly, reports also indicate that pedestrian and bicycle fatalities have also increased within the current decade, with 72% of pedestrian accidents along a roadway taking place away from intersections.  The Road Diet transportation enhancements will help address these safety issues.

All sidewalks and ADA curb ramps are now open for use, with pedestrian signal lights and bicycle lane marking on the way. Additionally, the roadway has been resurfaced and necessary pavement markings have been installed, including the dedicated center turn lane. Drivers are encouraged to use caution as everyone becomes accustomed to the new lane configuration .  During construction a full-time inspector will be on site to monitor progress and address concerns that arise.

The Road Diet is one piece in a complete streets program for Moore Park KOP that will continue with a new multimodal trail eventually extending from Allendale Road to North Gulph Road with a 10ft wide asphalt path with pedestrian lighting, seating areas, trash receptacles, canopy trees and planting beds. Thank you for your patience during construction. We look forward to the successful completion of this transportation improvement project.
