What's New at the ACFP and In Health Care
Message from the President
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
Nelson Mandela

As we all settle in to our regular ‘back to school’ schedules, I’m reminded why I became involved with our College. I was early in my career, and relatively new to Alberta. The ACFP, being the provincial chapter of the College of Family Physicians of Canada represents our community of family physicians and being involved with the ACFP was a way to connect with my colleagues and contribute to the impact our discipline of Family Medicine can have on the delivery of health care in our province.

We are a member organization not distracted by regulatory activity or negotiations, but one that focuses on education and excellence in family practice. No matter what uncertainties or challenges are presented, the ACFP can be counted on to stay the course and will remain true to its mandate. Continue reading.

Are UpToDate® credits automatically transferred to the CFPC and entered into my CME transcript?
Yes—My credits are automatically entered for me
No—I must enter these credits myself in the Self Learning category
* Only correct answers will be entered into the draw for a Starbucks card. The five lucky winners will be notified by email and will have their names published in our next issue.

In last month's poll we asked "Can I claim Mainpro+ credits for attending a SPONSORED event not certified by the CFPC?" The correct answer is:

No —Events that are sponsored and not formally reviewed/approved by the CFPC are not eligible for credits.

Industry-sponsored (e.g. pharmaceutical) sessions and meetings that do not bear the CFPC Certification Statement are not eligible for any type of Mainpro+ credits.

Thank you to everyone who participated! We received 59 responses (24 YES, 35 NO). All correct answers were entered to win and five lucky winners were drawn at random.

Congratulations to:

  • Dr. Shirley Gail Samuel-Haynes (Edmonton)

Enhancements to Engage Primary Care
Alberta’s health care system is constantly evolving and primary care is being asked more and more to provide advice and input on these changes.

To ensure the voice of family physicians is heard when these requests come in, we have created the Engage Primary Care portal a way to link requesters to those physicians who want to be engaged. In order for it to be a success, though, we need you!

Taking 10 minutes of your time to fill out the family physician engagement form helps us identify the leaders within our communities those physicians who want to have some sort of an impact or a voice in how primary care works in Alberta. Read more.
Engage Primary Care is a partnership between the Alberta College of Family Physicians, the Alberta Medical Association, Alberta Health Services, the Strategic Clinical Networks™ and the Primary Care Alliance.
