From the Director
Dear Colleague,

At Cornell, the fall semester began last month with in-person instruction. It is exciting to see campus come alive with students returning to Ithaca. Cornell is optimistic for an in-person semester of nearly normal operations.

At CHESS, we are also excited to welcome in-person users for the upcoming fall run. Cornell University laid out specific guidelines for people coming to CHESS:

  • CHESS Users from Cornell University and/or other facilities (not Cornell affiliated) will be allowed to come on site. There will be no restriction on the number of users allowed per beamline.
  • All CHESS users must wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
  • CHESS Users who are on site for more than 7 days will need to enroll in Cornell University’s Daily Check System (we expect this to be very few users, if any).

On Wednesday, September 20th, at 1pm (EDT), CHESS will hold an online CHESS town hall. During the town hall, we will be discussing Cornell's updated Covid-19 visitor policies, workshop updates, accelerator updates, check-in procedures, proposal updates, and more. This discussion will be most relevant to users with beamtime in the current run, but all CHESS users are welcome to attend.

We are still offering the ability to perform your experiment remotely, more information can be found in the Remote User Guide.

During the summer shutdown, we made significant progress toward improved user operations and the New Experimental Hall.   A few of the highlights include major upgrades to our power distribution infrastructure, upgrades to the linac and synchrotron RF power supplies, and repairs and maintenance to our cooling water systems. In our summer shutdown article, you can read about all of the beamline and equipment upgrades as we prepare for a brighter CHESS.

We will continue to provide updates on CHESS operations through the CHESS web site, this newsletter and by email.

I look forward to welcoming our CHESS users back into the lab! Hope to see you soon,

Joel Brock, Director, CHESS (email Joel)
2021 Summer Shutdown Highlights
During the summer maintenance period, we made significant progress on a huge number of jobs. A few of the highlights include major upgrades to our power distribution infrastructure, upgrades to the linac and synchrotron RF power supplies, and repairs and maintenance to our cooling water systems. Read more about progress made and what's to come!
Town Hall
As CHESS resumes user operations this fall, we want to update you on our current operating policies and procedures. CHESS is excited to welcome in-person users for the upcoming fall run!

On September 20th at 1pm, we are inviting all of our users to learn how CHESS will operate both in-person and remotely for the entire fall run.
Freeze! Researchers develop new protein crystallography tool
Combining state-of-the-art X-ray technology and cryogenics, Cornell physics researchers have developed a new method for analyzing proteins in action, a breakthrough that will enable the study of far more proteins than is possible with current methods.
NSF Award
Philip Milner, CHESS user and assistant professor of Chemical & Chemical Biology at Cornell University, has received the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award.
Structural and magnetic transitions in the planar antiferromagnet Ba4Ir3O10
New research based at the QM2 beamline reports detailed investigations of low temperature charge and magnetic superstructures in Ba4Ir3O10. Contrary to previous reports, the researchers discover a series of phase transitions to different long-range ordered states, without evidence of the proposed liquid-like magnetic correlations.
Lending Library
As students return to school, we'd like to remind teachers looking for fun and engaging STEM activities that kits are available through our Lending Library. The CHEXS Lending Library program serves as a repository for valuable science resources for middle school (grades 5-8) and high school (grades 9-12) teachers. Request a kit today!
Upcoming CHESS 2030 Workshops
These workshops are a chance to engage existing and future CHESS users, CHESS staff, and the accelerator community in the planning process for the future of CHESS. Upcoming workshops include "Ambient Crystallography", "Manipulating and Measuring Quantum States at <QM>2", "Accelerator Development at CHESS", and "Timing Experiments at CHESS"

Join us to help us shape the future at CHESS!
