September is Healthy Aging Month

At HCCI, we believe that access to quality care is essential for healthy aging, and it's a key part of our mission to ensure that older adults can age with dignity and independence. Each September, the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion celebrates Healthy Aging Month.

Healthy Aging Month is a time to focus on the positive aspects of growing older and encourage individuals to embrace a proactive approach to their health and well-being. This month highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as we age, emphasizing the value of regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, mental health care, and staying socially connected. It serves as a reminder to take steps towards preventive healthcare, engage in enriching activities, and prioritize self-care to ensure vitality and independence (which includes aging in place) well into later years. Healthy Aging Month inspires people of all ages to take charge of their health, set new wellness goals, and embrace aging as an opportunity for growth and fulfillment.

HCCI supports Healthy Aging Month by promoting home-based primary care that empowers seniors to age in place with dignity, ensuring access to quality healthcare and personalized support for maintaining their health and independence. How can you join this mission?

Caring for Caregivers

The issue of unpaid family caregivers was noted in Part IV of The Transformative Impact of House Calls series. According to Psychology Today, the work of unpaid family caregivers in the U.S. is valued at $600 billion annually. A survey from S&P Global and AARP shared the stressors and sacrifices that caregivers experience:

67% of family caregivers have difficulty balancing their jobs with caregiving duties.

27% of working caregivers have shifted from full-time to part-time work and 16% have turned down a promotion.

16% have stopped working entirely for a period — and 13% have changed employers — to meet caregiving responsibilities.

At HCCI, we believe that the future of healthcare is in the home. This vision includes support for caregivers, too. And these caregivers and their sacrifices are finally being seen. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released their GUIDE model this year, including support for caregivers. The National Academy for State Health Policy also just released a new State Policy Resource Guide.

How can you help ensure that this momentum continues?
