New AAP Policy Statement: Preventing Childhood Toxic Stress
By focusing on the safe, stable, and nurturing relationships (SSNRs) that buffer adversity and build resilience, pediatric care is on the cusp of a paradigm shift that could reprioritize clinical activities, rewrite research agendas, and realign our collective advocacy. Driving this transformation are advances in developmental sciences as they inform a deeper understanding of how early life experiences, both nurturing and adverse, are biologically embedded and influence outcomes in health, education, and economic stability across the life span.

Healthy Outcomes From Positive Experience Blog: HOPE in Practice
Pediatrician, Dr. Gretchen Pianka, had already created Resilience University when she first heard about HOPE. When Dr. Pianka met with Drs. Sege and Burstein, she realized that her vision to help foster family resilience fit perfectly within the HOPE Framework. At that time, her program focused primarily on promoting emotional growth and fostering the parent-child attachment to help build resilience in children. By doing Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) Cycles with families around the challenging emotional and relational issues, she was able to use a vetted quality improvement strategy to help families access more positive childhood experiences.

AAP Release Fifth Feature of
“Family Snapshots: Life During the Pandemic”
People who care for children and families have seen the enormous changes to US family life as well as the adaptability and resilience that families have shown during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In November 2020, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA), and Tufts Medical Center, surveyed 3000 parents and caregivers of children under the age of 18. The survey is one of 3 waves that will be conducted with a total of 9000 parents over a period of 7 months to measure the impact of the pandemic on family life, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and positive childhood experiences.

The survey led to the development of these five features, which you can read by following the link below!
AAP Trauma & Resilience ECHO
PATTeR’s educational series, AAP Trauma and Resilience ECHO, uses the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) model.

ECHO is an internet-based, interactive learning model that uses video conferencing technology to bring together specialty care providers/experts and providers in local communities. Each live 1-hour ECHO session consists of a didactic presentation and de-identified case-based discussion. At this time, no live AAP Trauma and Resilience ECHO sessions are being implemented, however; video recordings from the sessions are provided below.
