Ovarian cancer occurs most often between the ages of 50 and 65, but can happen at any age. Sometimes, ovarian cancer runs in families.

Polycystic ovary syndrome ("PCOS") is a condition that can cause irregular periods, acne, extra facial hair, or hair loss from the head. It is very common. About 10 percent of females have PCOS.

To screen for ovarian cancer, doctors can do a blood test called "CA 125," an imaging test called an ultrasound, or both. These tests do not always give useful information about whether a person has ovarian cancer.
