For decades, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. has maintained a strong relationship with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc. September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, designated by Congress to help focus attention on the need for research and treatment of sickle cell disease. 
Chapter ideas to raise Sickle Cell Awareness in September:
1.) Highlight Brothers of your chapter who live with Sickle Cell
  • Spotlight them on your social media platforms

2.) Partner with local Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc. (SCDAA) community-based organizations (CBOs) to volunteer/fundraise 
  • Find a local sickle cell community based organization HERE:
  • Host webinars/lunch and learns etc about sickle cell
  • Host a Twitter Party
  • Push daily/weekly facts about sickle cell disease
  • Participate in local CBO events such as a fundraising walk/run event

Host a Blood and Bone Marrow Donation Drive in partnership with a Local CBO
1.) Partner with American Red Cross
Encourage Sigma’s to donate blood (emphasizing the need for blood from people of color)
  • Sickle cell patients always need blood (chronic blood transfusion, etc), due to the pandemic, there is a shortage of blood, especially blood from donors of color.

2.) Partner with Be the Match
  • Encourage Sigma’s to sign up for the bone marrow donation registry (emphasizing the need for donations from people of color)
  • Sickle cell patients could potentially be cured through bone marrow transplant (if match found)
  • Lean More about Be the Match HERE.
Chapter ideas to raise Sickle Cell Awareness for the rest of the year:
1.) Participate in Local/National World Sickle Cell Day events:

2.) Participate in the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc. National Convention
  • Normally held in September or October
  • Become a Sponsor

3.) Participate in the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc. Annual Run/Walk 
  • Each chapter can create a run team and each chapter member can register for the walk
