New Alicia Sanchez International School Class Starts!
New Program Director Lupita Crespo has been working hard to get the Alicia class of Dreamer Scholars ready to start school at Alicia Sanchez International School in Lafayette this fall! Funding this class of first graders was a community effort--thank you to all our Dreamer Scholar Sponsors who made this possible!
We asked Lupita to tell us how it’s going!
What are you most excited about for this year?

I am most excited about changing these children’s lives. When I do home visits I let them know, “Hey, I’ll be in your life for the next 10 years…at least!” and they’re at the age where they can’t really see that happening yet. Once they’re in program with me this year, I think that is when they’ll realize that this is an extra special opportunity. This year I’m super excited to learn how each Dreamer Scholar is different, how they learn, react and work with each other.
What has been the best part of meeting your new Dreamer Scholars and their families?

The best part is feeling genuinely welcomed into their homes. Already many families have felt like my own because they offer me food, water and snacks while I’m there and it gives me a sense of being welcomed into their lives. I’m really excited to work with these families as the years go by!
What is your dream for these new Dreamer Scholars?

My Dream for the Alicia Dreamer Scholars is for them to truly find their passion as I present to them different experiences. I want the Dreamer Scholars to not be afraid to try different things or to speak to topics that challenge their views. I want them to know that they have a voice and that they are able to do whatever they set their heart and mind to.

And I can't wait to be here with them every step of the way .
Irene Lopez Wessell Honored at
"I Have A Dream" Building Dedication
On Wednesday, August 8th, 2018, CEO Lori Canova and Board Chair Allen Ginsborg officially dedicated the “I Have A Dream” Building in honor of Irene Lopez Wessell.

Lori thanked Irene for committing her life to working with children and youth in Boulder County, saying “Irene’s impact in our community is impressive! She’s worked with Camp Fire Girls, Head Start, Boulder County Latina Women’s League, and AmeriCorps. She also spent 20 years at RSVP providing volunteers to school programs, intergenerational programs like “I Have A Dream” Foundation and she was awarded the USC’s Outstanding Award for Intergenerational Services in Boulder County.”

“Irene has also served on the Governor’s Commission on National and Community Service and served through the Bright Mountain Foundation. Today she continues her legacy as a Kiwanian to serve youth in our Boulder County community,” Canova said.
The audience, which included the “I Have A Dream” Board of Directors, staff, Dreamer Scholars, as well as Irene’s friends and family, cheered and applauded her lifetime of dedication to children and people in need as the plaque was unveiled.
"Building the Dream" Interns Learned a LOT, Made a BIG Difference This Summer!
As summer came to a close, our six-week “Building the Dream” Internship Program hosts said goodbye to their awesome interns .

At the closing ceremonies, internship hosts shared their surprise and delight at all their interns were able to accomplish and what a substantial impact they made. Interns shared that they loved learning the ropes, from becoming an Excel whiz to working with patients in a healthcare setting.
The City of Boulder hosted "I Have A Dream" interns for the first time this year, welcoming a cohort of 8 interns across departments.

Alison Rhodes, Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation said, "This first year’s cohort of interns, and the program itself, exceeded all of our expectations . Across the organization, interns provided valuable insight and perspective to city employees while supporting key projects."
Thanks to all these great companies who hosted “I Have A Dream” high school and college interns this year!
