Living Hope

Peter the Apostle of Hope

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" 1 Peter 1:3

This verse written by Peter helps explain why over the years he has been given the title "the apostle of Hope.” Peter emphasizes the hope we have in being reborn through God's grace and our faith in the resurrection of His son, Jesus. This is a "living hope.” We must recognize that Scripture often uses the word “hope” differently from the way we use it today. Typically, we use the word “hope” when we are referring to uncertainties. We might say that we “hope” the Bucs win this game in order to express our desire while also conveying that although we have Tom Brady, we know a win is not certain. However, when the Apostles speak of our “hope” in Christ, they do not mean that our hope is uncertain. As the body of Christ, we have confidence in the fulfillment of God's promises. Biblical hope refers to certainties, for our holy God is incapable of breaking His pledges to us (Heb. 6:18). So, when the Apostles speak of the “hope of salvation” promised to us (1 Thess. 5:8), they speak of a surety. No “hope” that we may have is more secure than the hope of salvation promised to everyone who trusts in Christ. (adapted by Allyson Stanley from Ligonier Ministries)

Hillsborough House of Hope's foundation is built upon the truth of God and His power that restores, redeems and gives life. We have been so blessed to be a part of God's mission to bring redemption, recovery and rejoicing to our residents, who are His children by the spirit of adoption through Christ. Because of you we can continue providing a safe, affordable, and comfortable environment where residents can grow healthy relationships with themselves, with others and with God.

Residents Reflections on HHH and the Power of God

Resident, Kandi a recent graduate and now House Manager says,

"I was never grateful for what I had before. But, since being here, getting to know God and having a nice, clean house around sober, clean people I've grown to be very grateful... Today, I have food, lots of clothes, friends who are honest and clean, loving and friendly. I have people who will look after me, people who care about me and I am really grateful for all of that. I thank God every night for all I have."

Our newest resident expressed her gratitude to me this morning as well.

"The place I was at before God lead me here was horrible. I was trying my best to get through it until I just surrendered and prayed to God asking Him to help me stay in His will and find somewhere to go. God is so funny because after that I got connected with Ms. Linda. She has such a big heart. She really cares. And this place is wonderful. My first day here we all enjoyed a meal together and prayed over each other in the morning. God is so good! He really is."

"God help me to be the woman you created me to be; doing what you have created me to do."

In Loving Memory of Founder Margaret Palmer

We mourn the passing of our founder, Margaret Palmer, 96 years of age. She was called home to Jesus and God the Father on September 4 of this year. A volunteer counselor with the county prison system, Margaret was moved by the Holy Spirit to establish Hillsborough House of Hope in 1998, after reading the passage of scripture in Matthew 25:31-40.

"God help me to be the woman you created me to be; doing what you have created me to do."

- Margaret Palmer

Margaret had a fervent, loving spirit and worked tirelessly to serve God and His children. She loved Psalm 91 and had each resident read it upon their arrival.

Her memory continues to inspire the residents and graduates of Hillsborough House of Hope and everyone who loved her dearly.

A memorial for Margaret will be held on October 7, 2022, 11 am at Hyde Park United Methodist Church, 500 Platt St. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hillsborough House of Hope Building Fund. HHHopefl.org
