MAIN MESSAGE

Principal Sean Priest

It’s always a good feeling when the law catches up with what you know in your heart to be true. So it is this year with emergency preparedness drills for lockdowns. Sometime in the early 2010s, it became incumbent on schools to provide an accurate simulation of a high-level emergency lockdown during the school day. We coordinated with law enforcement, classes practiced building barricades and staying silent while we went door to door through the hallways with a checklist of rooms to ensure total compliance. After a few years, we started talking as a staff. Was this “practice” more traumatizing than it needed to be?

So we adjusted our practice. While still falling within the parameters of our mandate, we began to have teachers present a slide deck outlining procedures students could expect to follow in the event of a lockdown of the school. These procedures are developed in partnership with local agencies as part of the county’s Big Five protocols. Instead of scaring our kids, we decided to have a conversation with them.

After reviewing best practices around barricading doors and behavior expectations in the event of an emergency, we practice exiting classrooms and proceed to designated meeting points on the football field. It takes about 20 minutes to evacuate the campus and account for all students. Students from our Health Careers Academy, trained in emergency response, help facilitate the activity. Once we have the all-clear, we thank our students for their orderliness and cooperation and dismiss them for lunch.

Most of them go about their days without a second thought about what we just practiced. Many, however, are very strongly affected by the idea of gun violence on campus. I am, despite knowing all about our detailed safety procedures for a variety of distressing scenarios. Unequivocally, we are in an ideal situation: our school partners with the amazing Redwood City Police and Fire Departments, and is staffed by veteran teachers, aides, and non-classroom personnel, and a seasoned administrative team. Students are in good hands here. Nonetheless, we all lose sleep thinking about the possibility of an armed intruder. We accept it, begrudgingly, as part of life in 21st-century America.

To help provide even more peace of mind, we partnered several years ago with the Sandy Hook Promise Foundation to provide students access to a 24/7 tip line, live chat capabilities with a human respondent, and real-time communication with school and local law enforcement when urgent health and safety matters come to light. All students are trained during the first week of school on how to use the platform. I have been impressed with the maturity and care students have shown in utilizing this resource. Your students look out for one another. We’ve even had students report when their peers experience a strong negative impact from the emergency training.

Which is why this year’s changes to the California Education Code around emergency lockdown drills are so welcome. Moving forward, the requirements will be even more closely aligned to the approach we’ve been taking at Sequoia for the past seven years. They include (per Section 3282):

  • No high-impact drills (e.g., simulations of active shooters, realistic props, or resistance tactics).
  • Mandatory advance notification
  • Opt-out option available
  • Announcements required before and after the drill
  • Trauma-informed & age-appropriate drills
  • Post-drill wellness resources available

Our next emergency drill will take place on 10/2, hopefully with even fewer students experiencing unhealthy anxiety over the activity. We take our drills seriously and are grateful that our students do as well. We are encouraged by the more humanity-centered approach to maintaining a safe and prepared learning environment for students and families.

Have a great week!

Best,

Sean
