The partnership between Sequoia High School and the Redwood City Police Department is long-standing. Over the years, it has included outreach for drug and alcohol awareness, driver safety, after-school mentorships, and summer programming. Sequoia students and families are safer because of the RCPD's community-based approach to public safety.
We are excited, within the context of this rich shared history, to welcome Officer Aaron Susman to Sequoia as our new School Liaison Officer. Officer Susman is a native of the Peninsula, bilingual, and a graduate of American University in Washington, DC. He served two years as a member of the Peace Corps in Burkina Faso. He is a father of two and a Redwood City resident.
As a Redwood City Police Officer in the wake of the pandemic, he was instrumental in the development of a series of successful youth outreach programs, leveraging his martial arts mastery, knack for organizing, and natural rapport with young people. Walking around campus last week with Officer Susman, dressed in his civilian clothes, I noted at least ten students within 25 minutes who recognized him and greeted him warmly.
As Sequoia's Liaison Officer, Aaron will coordinate services and support from the department. This will include health and welfare checks, follow-up with victims of crimes, and emergency preparation and response. He will work closely with Sequoia's Administrative Vice Principals, where his asset-mindedness for young people will fit in perfectly with our culture of unconditional positive regard.
Officer Susman begins his assignment at Sequoia on October 20. We look forward to welcoming him aboard.
