PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
The first person I met when I started working at Sequoia in 2011 was plant manager Cherry Stephens. The plant manager oversees the day-to-day operation of the facility. Along with day team members Fine Lauese and Ramiro Macías, Cherry opens the building, checks on the custodial routes from the night crew, addresses urgent problems that may have arisen, and checks her email for requests from Sequoia or district personnel (including her sometimes heedless principal). When people talk about how beautiful our school looks and feels – and they do: students, families, community members – I know that I have Cherry’s leadership to thank for that.

I’m feeling the need to celebrate this leadership now because after 11 years together, this year will be Cherry’s last. She is retiring.

Sequoia, like any 90-year old campus, is a quirky place. There are over 100 classrooms whose tenants look to Cherry to resolve any number of urgent issues. A stopped clock, small scurrying feet overhead, a jammed window: Cherry addresses it all before brunch. When a staff member -- heaven forbid -- loses a key, the visit to Cherry’s office for a replacement is a dreaded affair. Most of the time, though they deserve a scolding, Cherry is sympathetic while issuing a replacement.

She coordinates efforts with district maintenance, operations, and technology crews to stop leaky pipes, trim insubordinate tree branches, replace floors, or any other number of projects. She supervises a team of eight. Because there are no substitutes when custodians call in sick, Cherry will often stay past the end of her work day to pitch-in on event set-ups or begin her day with a cursory pass through an absent worker’s route.

Cherry’s professionalism, knowledge, and skill working with people makes her uniquely suited for this challenging job. She is patient and thorough. The adjustments required due to the pandemic, for instance, has presented Cherry with a series of logistical headaches. Markings in halls to direct foot traffic, air filters, ventilation, absent team members. It has not been an uneventful final chapter of her career.

More than any of us over the last two years, she’s taken these zigs and zags with characteristic purposefulness and calm, making the adjustments she needed to make and communicating with the people she needed to communicate with. If she’s frustrated, you’ll almost never know. It takes a lot to make Cherry complain. Unless it’s about someone losing their keys. That gets her.

Have a great week!

Sean

Science Olympiad's first Satellite Tournament
On February 12th, the Sequoia Science Olympiad had twenty-nine students from all grade levels participate in their first Satellite Tournament; the Golden Gate Science Olympiad Tournament hosted by Stanford and UC Berkeley. Students have been working tirelessly to prepare since October, and it paid off! It was equally challenging and fun for the whole club, from students deciphering messages in Codebusters to conducting experiments in Experimental Design.

Meetings are still happening on Mondays during lunch! For more info check out the Sequoia Science Olympiad website or the Sequoia High School Clubs list.

Academy students chronicle pandemic achievements
On February 17th, junior students in the Health Careers Academy and Digital Arts Academy met with their mentors for the 4th event of the season. Students and mentors met virtually to review and revise the student's résumés that they have been working on in class. Academy students were able to reflect on the difficult times during the pandemic, when many of them took on additional responsibilities in order to support their families. It was powerful to see these students open up about the challenges they have overcome, and to assist them in creatively logging these experiences and responsibilities as a résumé entry. We are proud of our students' resilience, and through this event we were able to celebrate their achievements!
