5 reasons why YOU should volunteer with PTSA next year
-
You’re enjoying the SENTINEL right now, right? It takes volunteers to prepare this essential publication.
-
Contribute to the GREAT EXPERIENCE Sequoia families, students and staff have on campus - from staff appreciation, to new teacher gifts, to hot chocolate at football games (deluxe, please!) to the Mini Grant program, and so much more.
-
SEQUOIA PRIDE! (GO RAVENS!)
-
This is your LAST OPPORTUNITY to participate in your student(s)’ school experience. They will be moving on to LIFE after this.
- Being A PART OF IT FEELS GOOD.
Don’t be shy, and we will train you. None of us have time, but we do it anyway. We are recruiting for:
-
EVP (shadow President, Host the Principal Coffees with SHSEF)
-
Auditor (twice-yearly audit of Treasurer binder)
-
Sentinel staff (member of a team that rotates working on Sentinel to reduce burden)
- And more!
To sign up or if you have questions, email Karen Gebhart.
Join us for our next PTSA/ELAC meeting on Tuesday April 2 at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room (MPR). On tap is an update from Mr. Priest.

Help students thrive during IB Exam season
Whether your student is taking an IB Exam or not, we need your help. If your student is taking an IB Exam we'll station you in a different room than your child.
3 reasons you'll love this volunteer opportunity:
-
REDUCE A STUDENT'S STRESS LEVEL. Your support and smile can make a huge difference for a nervous student!
-
BE PART OF SOMETHING BIG. The IB requires a 1:20 adult to student ratio for exams. With ~ 400 students taking ~ 1600 exams, Sequoia needs a huge team to make this work.
-
IT'S EASY. No need to prepare anything! Our staff will give you the simple instructions you need to feel helpful and successful. All we need is your presence!

Thanks to all who donated supplies and/or time
The staff appreciation breakfast was a big success, thanks to all who donated supplies and those who helped set up, serve and clean up. Some staff opted for ordering ahead breakfast and hot drinks, which were assembled and delivered by student and parent volunteers; other staff came to the lounge to order their own espresso drinks like mochas and lattes, as well as hot cocoa and tea from Caffe Carrello's coffee cart. They then loaded up on the assortment of breakfast items available.
Many staff commented, "This is my favorite day of the year!" and "We feel so loved."
Our community always shows up in such a big way! Thank you again!

Applications for annual PTSA Junior Scholarships open
For the past several years, the Sequoia PTSA has granted scholarships to Sequoia juniors. Three categories of scholarships include: academic success, community service, or achievement in the face of socio-economic challenges. This is a great way for juniors to get a head start on college applications, be recognized for all they've done to make Sequoia a better place, and earn some money to continue their education! Each scholarship is worth $250.
Click here for the application and more information on applying for PTSA Junior Scholarships. Applications are due by Sunday, April 21 at 10:00 p.m.

Students venture to Fitzgerald Marine Preserve to explore tidepools
22 ESL students, accompanied by teachers Stacy Wenzel and Juan Duran, visited Fitzgerald Marine Preserve in Moss Beach on March 16.
Guided by expert docents, they explored the complex and fragile inter-tidal area, home to sea stars, mollusks, crabs, algae and sponges. Following this dive into sea life, the students shared a BBQ lunch and some beach free time. Sierra Club’s ICO Program (Inspiring Connections Outdoors) coordinated and funded the trip.
We are grateful to the Friends of Fitzgerald Marine Volunteer docents, San Mateo County Parks and the Sierra Club for helping us enjoy one of the natural wonders of Northern California’s coastline. Thank you to Ms. Wenzel and Mr. Duran for spending a Saturday inspiring outdoor and language connections.

Some students in the ELD classes are in need of hiking boots. In particular, we need Women's sizes 5, 5.5 and 6. Another two sizes that would be very helpful to receive are Women's sizes 9.5 and 10. We will also take any other sizes of boots you want to donate. Please drop off with Elvira Macias between 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. She will distribute the boots to the students who need them. If we have a surplus of boots, we will donate them to a community organization or a school that also sponsors wilderness trips. Thank you! Stacy Schmidt Wenzel

Sponsor a Sequoia student's prom ticket
Prom season is here! This year's event is Saturday, April 27 at the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
Our one-day sale for prom tickets is Friday, April 5 ($90). Standard ticket sales will run from April 15-19 ($110) and last chance tickets will be available April 22-24 ($125).
We know that this is a significant cost and presents challenges for some of our students. Reduced-cost tickets are available through the Family Center for qualifying students, and we invite families to sponsor tickets for students. Thank you so much in advance!

Sophomores completed 11th-grade course selection in English II classes with counselors between March 18 and 21. Not all 10th graders will be meeting with their counselor for 11th-grade course selection (required for students that are credit deficient, IB Diploma candidates, and students that have further questions). If you made an appointment for 11th-grade course selection with your counselor, please check your email or Google Calendar for your appointment details. The counseling office will not be sending out passes for your appointment. Counselors will be meeting with current 10th grade students for 2024-25 course selection until April 5. If you need to reschedule, please contact your assigned counselor as soon as possible.
