Sequoia PTSA's weekly eNewsletter in partnership with the Sequoia High School Education Foundation
|
|
Prom is a rite of passage for all of us, an annual celebration of community and personal identity. Each prom I’ve attended as Sequoia principal has been more fun than the last. For this week’s newsletter, I want to share some of what I learned at Sequoia’s Enchanted Forest prom held Friday at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park:
- Formal photos aren't as popular as they once were but the 360 photo booth had a line all night.
- High heels are painful, especially when you’re wearing them for the first time. Luckily, standard prom amenities include slippers. So…mini donuts and slippers – do these kids have it good these days or what?!?
- As proclaimed by the SUHSD student school board board trustee, “Sequoia moshes better than Woodside”. Carlos, a Woodside senior, assured me he was with us as an official district envoy.
-
The Corialis Effect does not change the direction of swirling toilet water in the southern hemisphere…but it does alter the course of the California Academy of Science’s 30-foot Foucault’s Pendulum enough to knock over a small metal peg every 40 minutes or so (to raucous applause). Exhibit A of why Sequoia’s Prom was cooler than mine: kids discussing the Corialis Effect while “Gasolina” cranks in the background.
- When you use the panorama feature on your iPhone to vertically scan a person at close range, it makes a really funny distorted portrait.
- Penguins are heavy sleepers.
- No matter how many messages and reminders you send, somebody’s ride home always falls through. Some embarrassed kid, in turn, has to stand around outside making chit-chat with a a tired, impatient administrator as the building closes and everyone else has gone home. This year’s unfortunate (but good-natured) kiddos finally got picked up at 12:32 a.m..
- Manners matter: kids were unfailingly polite throughout the evening. Excuse me’s and thank you’s were the norm.
-
Finally, after 20 years attending proms as an educator, I’m happy to report that “Low” by rubber band inventor Flo Rida is, in the words of one of our staff chaperones, “still a banger”.
Hope everyone’s students were safe last night – and had as much fund as I did.
Have a great week!
Best,
Sean

May 20: Bike to work, school & wherever day
|
|
May is National Bike Month, and Bike to Wherever Day is nearly here!! Friday May 20 is officially Bike to School, Work & Wherever Day, so whether you ride every day or haven't ridden in a while, Friday is the day to join your classmates and community by biking on our streets.
Look for an Energizer Station near you, where riders can stop for refreshments & resources. The closest one to Sequoia High School will be at Hopkins Avenue and Alameda, from 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 20.
- Energizer Station locations
- Events including free maintenance and repair sessions
- How to pledge to ride and receive cool bike swag
- Used bike sales
In honor of Bike Month, here are a few tips:
- Keep tires in the recommended air pressure range to make it easier to pedal.
- Put chain oil on your bike chain about once a month to make pedaling easier and shifting smoother.
- Raise the seat height as you grow. Riding is easier when your knees don't have to bend as much.
Happy riding!
