A few years ago, Sequoia Librarian and Media Specialist Betsy Snow started asking questions about summer reading assignments for students. Historically, Sequoia students were given autonomy to choose from a carefully developed list of books designed to enrich their experience in English classes during the regular year. These books were meant to compliment works they would be reading and discussing in class.
The concept of curation is of increasing importance for critical thinking. Being informed means knowing how to obtain relevant information from sources. While there remains primacy to the written work, ideas about what constitutes a “text” are evolving. It works both ways. Demonstrating knowledge can take on many forms: emails, slide decks, infographics, video presentations, etc.
As Ms. Snow spoke with our teachers and students, she developed a new approach to “summer reading” and Sequoia students are now asked to complete a Summer Literacy Experience. Through the activities, students will grow their literacy across platforms, which include podcasts, art, infographics, and other “texts”. They will be asked to analyze or vet social media, non-fiction, and other sources of information.
Options are grade-level specific and completion earns students a badge. We have had students from other schools tell us they completed Sequoia’s Summer Literacy Experience just for fun. Anyone who knows Ms. Snow, of course, won’t be surprised by this. At a school where teachers excel at making learning fun, Ms. Snow is peerless.
I encourage you to check out this video to learn about the project from the student perspective and take a few minutes to talk with your students about which pathway they are going to follow this summer in preparation for next year.
Have a great week!
Best,
Sean
