What do you remember about the first day of high school? No, I mean, what do you REALLY remember?
The experience is rooted in our consciousness, both before and after the actual day occurs. Professional educators spend an inordinate amount of time trying to control factors that will lead to a successful “transition.” It looms as an emotional milestone for parents. Teens hold onto expectations – both positive and negative – then, in my experience, largely eschew them when the day actually arrives and passes in a blur. Regardless of what concrete details actually stick, it remains a universally evocative concept. The first day of high school…
Of course, the iconic day arrived last week for 464 ninth-graders at Sequoia. As I do every year, I asked students what they thought they’d remember about the first day of 2022-23. Reporting out on topics most often kids raised by our students:
- Everyone’s new shoes looked fly.
- Several kids did, in fact, get lost but had their course corrected by a friendly student or staff member.
- Teachers spoke explicitly about empathy and community.
- Most kids appear to have zeroed in on a lunch routine: a group to hang with, a picturesque location, timing around lines, bells, and shade.
- The handful of kids still looking for their tribe at lunch are on our radar, we’ll continue trying to connect them next week.
- Students are instant experts (“I got this, Mr. Priest”) using Infinite Campus for schedules, CANVAS for coursework, the Flex Time sign-up form, and their school Gmail to access important messages like the one from Vice Principal Sophia Olliver on Friday.
- New friends, old friends, friends with whom we reconnect…it’s all about friends.
I’m guessing, like many of us, our newest Sequoia students have already forgotten much about the first day of high school. As the weeks turn into months and their identities develop and take shape, those memories will recede even further. My hope, modest but sincere, is that three memories from a student’s first day at Sequoia take root and last a lifetime. They are as follows:
- I went to high school in a beautiful, safe place.
- I was surrounded by people for whom kindness and respect was a priority.
- I was excited about what lie ahead.
I’m proud to have been a part of launching another successful school year at Sequoia High School. We’ve got more memories to make together over the next nine months. I’m looking forward to sharing this time with you.
Have a great week!
Best,
Sean

Class of 2023: football concessions rep needed
|
Alright, Senior parents, this is the home stretch! Your student's last year at Sequoia. If you were thinking about how you could pitch in, look no further. Class of 2023 needs a football concessions rep. You will organize concessions sales and volunteers at each home football game, based on playbooks from previous years, and your own extra something. Football concessions proceeds contribute to Grad Night funds. Grab a buddy for a co-lead, and have a blast! Contact 2023 Graduation Chair Joanna Jeffs.

PTSA welcomes back teachers and staff
|
The PTSA kicked off the school year by hosting a picnic lunch for teachers and staff this past Monday to show how much we appreciate all they do. Thanks so much to all the families who contributed food and drinks, and especially to the parents who took time out during the last few days of summer break to help set up, serve food, and clean up. We couldn’t have done it without you!
