PTSA'S MESSAGE

Now that we are in the swing of things, I have some ‘asks’ of you.

  1. Thank the Sentinel team for another great issue.
  2. Support your Ravens and the Class of 2023 Safe and Sober Grad Night by supporting the Concession Stand at Home football games where you can buy coffee, mochas, hot chocolate, the fan favorite Cup-o-Noodles or buttery popcorn.
  3. Add the PTSA/ELAC meeting schedule to your family calendar.

PTSA and ELAC meet together at 7:00 p.m. on the 1st Tuesday of every month. We meet on campus in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) and are privileged to kick off each meeting with an update from our Principal, Mr. Priest. Each meeting has a special topic, after which the PTSA and ELAC split to conduct their respective business. All are welcome - members and non members.

Meetings are not streamed, so please join us in person on the following dates:

  • Oct. 4
  • Nov. 1
  • Dec. 6
  • Jan. 2023: PTSA will not meet / ELAC will meet
  • Feb. 7
  • Mar. 7
  • Apr. 4
  • May 2

Email me if you have expertise to share as a guest speaker at a PTSA meeting. Are you a family counselor with tips and tricks for raising teens? Are you a non-profit or corporate executive with views on what skills are trending? Do you work for the city of Redwood City and want to share news with the Sequoia parent population? Let us know!

Here’s to a safe and happy Labor Day and - GO RAVENS!

Reflections Art Program kicks off with “Show Your Voice”

The PTSA’s Reflections Art Program kicks off in September with the theme, “Show Your Voice”. Since 1969, this program has increased community awareness of the importance of arts in education.

Reflections encourages students to:

  • be inspired and unleash creative talents.
  • express themselves imaginatively through artwork.
  • experience the joy of creating art.
  • tap into critical thinking skills to create art inspired by a theme.
  • receive positive recognition for original works of art.

Join us as we kick off our 2022-2023 program in September. Contact Margaret Brockman or Meredith Park to get involved at sequoiareflections@gmail.com.

PTSA Mini-Grants are coming soon

STUDENTS and STAFF: Mini-Grants are coming soon! Through the support from the Sequoia High School Education Foundation (SHSEF), the PTSA is able to offer financial grants to enhance education at Sequoia. Grants of up to $750 are designed to inspire creative initiatives for learning and/or to address a compelling need that might otherwise go unmet.

Applications will be accepted Sept. 24-Oct. 8. Students who have an idea for a project that will benefit the school but need funding, are encouraged to apply. See HERE for additional information.

PARENTS: If you have a few hours to review applications and meet with the other committee members (one to two evenings in Oct.), we would love to have you join our review committee. No experience necessary. This is a great opportunity to learn about the constructive, beneficial projects happening at the school. Contact sequoiaminigrants@gmail.com to join the selection committee.

What is the PTSA?

The Sequoia PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) is part of a nationwide network of 4 million families, students, educators and community leaders working to improve education, health and safety conditions for our children. Here are some benefits of being part of a network:

  • Guidance: Resources, training and support for volunteers, which makes the time we donate to Sequoia High School more efficient.
  • Financial: Volunteers, events and finances are protected by low-cost insurance.
  • Platform for our voices: Families influence issues that affect our children and extend beyond the boundaries of Sequoia Union High School District.

Without our members, we wouldn't be able to do all the good things we do for children and families. Please JOIN the PTSA today. Questions? Email sequoiaptsatreasurer@gmail.com.

Sequoia's Site Council is looking for you!

How many times do you ask yourself, “What is the deal with that policy at Sequoia? If it were up to me…” Well, stop asking and be a part of the solution!

Sequoia’s Site Council, a team of Sequoia’s teachers and staff, administrators, parents, and students who meet throughout the year to develop and implement plans to improve school instruction, services, and the school environment is looking for more members.

Do you have a couple of hours once a month to be a part of this important committee that discusses topics like: student stress, teacher and student involvement in school policy such as tardiness and class size, school cleanliness, and many others? Then Sequoia’s Site Council might be just what you’re looking to be a part of!

Contact Karen Gebhart with your interest.

Volunteer to work with newcomers

Hello Sequoia community,

I am looking for two volunteers to help out weekly on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m.-12:10 p.m. with an ELD class of recent immigrants. Volunteers will lead a small group of the same students over time (when possible). We meet 3 times a month, however, the schedule is dependent on Sequoia's schedule.

Some teaching experience and/or intermediate/advanced Spanish language proficiency is helpful, but not necessary. Previous volunteers with no Spanish or teaching experience have been successful. Support and materials for activities will be provided. Clearance to volunteer requires a TB test and paperwork.

I am also looking for ‘substitutes’ for the 10:30 a.m.-12:10 p.m. sessions, and for my 8:30-10:10 a.m. sessions.

Lastly, I am hoping to find a Vietnamese-speaking volunteer for this opportunity.

Please contact Stacy Schmidt Wenzel if you are interested.

Volunteer in the Media Center

Looking for an occasional volunteer opportunity on campus? Join the Media Center Volunteer crew. Duties include textbook and media check-out and check-in, lunchtime support, and other various library tasks in a welcoming, student-facing environment.
