PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
The Sequoia Club Day “gauntlet” this year stretched well over a hundred yards along the tree lined pathway in front of campus. Students making their way through the lineup were greeted on both sides by the over 60 student-run clubs and organizations. It took almost the entire lunch period to see them all. It was boisterous enough to allow for separate DJs to blast music at both ends of the pathway without overlapping sound: pop and hip hop on one end, classic rock on the other. Here are some of the highlights for me:

  • It’s unclear if the Cheese Club anticipated the enthusiasm their branding efforts would generate, but “Cheese Guy” (a student wrapped head-to-toe in yellow streamers) is likely still trending on the socials.
  • The Latino Student Union’s next-level table set-up (tent, professional signage, enthusiastic members dressed to impress) set the bar this year. If I thought foot traffic would grow my club, I’d request to be assigned to the space immediately next to the LSU. It seemed to work for the adjacent Spanish-Speaking Game Club, anyway.
  • I have no official tally, but based on my eyes and the relative emptiness of the rest of campus during the event, I put Club Day attendance at around 1,100.
  • Three students from the 9th Grade Raven Circle which I facilitate each week were signing up new members to their club. It was a proud moment to see these students who have been here for just over a month emerging as leaders.
  • Best T-Shirt award (again…) goes to the Black Student Union.
  • A colleague explained that our Dungeons and Dragons Club is likely popular because of the phenomenon of Stranger Things. Surprisingly, the D&D Club leader I spoke with had never seen the Netflix show. Go figure.
  • There are two automotive clubs and two weightlifting clubs. Administration is monitoring this situation closely. We endorse neither drag racing nor pose-offs so will do what we can to keep the peace. The Froot Troop, conversely, has no analogue.
  • Nothing but love for the Robotics Club and their majestic purple capes.
  • The Baking Club promised the perks of my honorary membership will include a future sweet treat. Documenting this agreement here and patiently awaiting fulfillment.

Club Day 2022 was the biggest and most energized in memory. I left the event inspired by how passionate our students are about making Sequoia an inclusive and authentic place – a Place of Friends. You should be very proud of your students!

Have a great week!

Best,
Sean
