MAIN MESSAGE
Principal Sean Priest
It sometimes seems like the students who show up in January are different from the ones who went away in December. Twelfth graders, of course, are “suffering” profoundly from senioritis. Graduation and the end of all this childishness can’t come soon enough. Bless their hearts. For ninth-graders, in addition to physical changes inherent to adolescence, their timidity is wearing off. It’s dawning on them that there’s mischief to be made – good and bad. Tenth graders are at sea. Signs of restlessness appear in all the ways you imagine they would. “How long can this possibly go on?” is the subtext to most conversations I have with sophomores.

The stress of 11th grade casts its pall perhaps most acutely: for some students, the realization that time is running out to get their act together sharpens. For others, pressure mounts – misguided as it may be – that every test/assignment/project/comment could make or break their pathway to success. My heart aches around this time every year for eleventh graders. It’s going to be ok, Ravens!

How these general trends manifest with your individual student at home might make your heart ache, too. It also might make your blood boil. Bottom line: it’s not easy being a teenager. We probably remember those who inspired us in adolescence because they, at least in appearance, demonstrated some level of empathy for our struggles.

In my experience, that inspiration often blossoms in a different part of the garden than where we spend most of our days tending. I hope you are able to help your student understand that, as important as the results of an IB IA or the SAT might seem, they do not measure the things that truly make a difference. Namely:

  • The power every student has to be a good friend
  • The limits of their potential
  • The bounds of their creativity
  • The depths of their kindness and empathy
  • Their integrity and strength character
  • The joy their sense of humor brings

I’m looking forward to getting through another spring semester with our students. I will have a smile on my face throughout.

Have a great week!

Sean

Costa Rica Youth Exchange
Spanish confidence thrives when we are open to new people, new outlooks, and new challenges. Since 1998, our Costa Rica high school summer exchange brings youth together in a mutually shared experience of friendship and community spirit. Visiting teens thrive in our welcoming school culture, as well as share mornings and lunchtime (four days week). We've developed a special core of relaxed/non-academic sessions that are both fun and socially interactive with local teens.

Let's get cracking!
Planning for Sequoia’s Crab Feed Dinner (Saturday, March 11) is in full swing. To make this event a success, we need volunteers to help in the following areas: procurement and event logistics. We also need Sequoia athletes to help serve. Email to get involved.

For donations: If you love hosting parties or you're just looking for a reason to hang out more with your Sequoia community members, how about offering to host a party? It's a great way to bring together Sequoia families and make new friends while benefiting our athletes. Parties can be adult-only gatherings, teen/kid events, or fun for the whole family.

Do you own a business or have items and services to donate? We'd love to have them! To donate an auction item, please fill out our Crab Dinner & Auction Donation Form 2023
Jan. 23: Boosters Meeting
