High schools are large, complex institutions. When they function as communities, like our does, it is because folks are driven to excel in their roles. We see this every day from the students, staff, and families at Sequoia who go above and beyond in their roles. I’m no organizational theorist, but I’ve come to believe gratitude to be essential in strong, functioning communities. This week, being about more than just brining and trussing, I’ve opened the Sentinel message up to some of my colleagues who shared why they’re grateful this year.
EML/English Teacher Matthew Wohl:
“I'm grateful to all of my students enrolled in ELD 1. They are tasked with not only learning a new language but also a new culture. They inspire me to be as resilient as they are when I am tasked with challenges in my career and personal life. I'm also really grateful to my two department heads, Jane Slater and Jasmine Schimeck, both of whom have provided me with guidance, support, and freedom as I joined a new school this year. Lastly, I want to thank my colleagues for welcoming me, opening themselves to collaboration, and sharing much-needed instructional resources that I especially needed this year.”
Librarian and Media Specialist Betsy Snow:
“I’m so grateful for Taylor White and her amazing students, for creating a positive bonding opportunity for teachers learning the staff dance. It was such a gift to laugh with other adults during the school day!”
Spanish/AVID Teacher Scott Stalder-Skarmoutsos:
“Students for their efforts to connect with each other and the staff. The security for helping students be in class and out of trouble.”
Piano and Choral Teacher Othello Jefferson:
“I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented students who have refused to let the challenges of a post-pandemic world keep them from growing as musicians/artists, expanding their musical horizons, and continuing their respective musical journeys!”
Yearbook Advisor Andrew Mancini:
“I am grateful for — and inspired by — students who dedicate time during lunch and after school to pursue their diverse, exciting passions in one of Sequoia's many clubs! It's wonderful to see students take their background interests, talents, and the skills they learn in the classroom and apply them to community-building activities, event planning, fundraisers, serving others, and everything in between. (Hint: For a sample of Sequoia's clubs, check out the bulletin!)”
Mental Health Therapist Rebekah Howard:
“I am deeply appreciative of the thought leaders on this campus who pioneer forward each day with a bigger vision for societal peace. I am thankful for those who foster meaningful, harmonious connections among all cultures, ethnicities, traditions, gender identities, and norms. I hold a deep gratitude for our principal, who isn't afraid to begin again with a fresh perspective when it isn't always popular or easy. I am also thankful for the leaders who forge ahead on this campus with the ability and courage to see those educators who hold a higher frequency of firm but loving expectations for our students — which in turn uplifts our youth to find and feel true belonging, connection, and authentic respect. This is an intentional space that we share with each other here at SHS — it's palpable and noteworthy.”
Spanish Teacher Juana Marchal Extremera:
“I give thanks for being part of such an amazing school and community. I am thankful every day for that! I feel that I belong in the school community, looking for, inspiring and promoting critical thinkers who will work for a better world, respect people, and care for our beautiful planet.”
I hope everyone has a restful and joyous Thanksgiving.
Best,
Sean
