PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
“Make Sequoia the school you want it to be” is a phrase you will frequently hear around campus, especially from vice principals Sophia Olliver and Gary Gooch. Walk through the main breezeway into the quad and you’ll see examples of some great students doing just that.

Student leaders from the ASB created a Kindness Calendar (see the article in General Announcements below) for December 2021. It has been distributed on various platforms, and staff members have taken it home to share with friends and family -- making our community the community we want it to be. Maybe you have already witnessed some of the recommendations from this past week in action, such as Friday's "call a far-away friend or relative to say hello or catch up." Or you can set aside time now in this busy month and plan to "go for a 20-minute walk outside and leave your phone at home" on December 20.

Maybe some of these will become a regular routine. Mindfulness practices are powerful. Communities thrive when our desire for friends, families, and neighbors to find fulfillment matches or exceeds our own. At the end of a school semester, with important deadlines barreling towards us and finals just around the corner, we can measure the strength of our community by the efforts we see to lift one another up.

Through this lens, I see much to be proud of at Sequoia, particularly in the ways in which various student leaders have leaped into action around the cause of minimizing stress and anxiety linked to this time of year. Here's to a strong end to the semester for our entire community!

Best,
Sean

COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND EVENTS
Hands-on Spanish

Most student travel programs miss out on the powerful reasons why youth desire to be bilingual. Massive student travel programs spend most of their marketing dollars highlighting Americans having fun with other Americans. Unfortunately for many young people, travel is just entertainment and lacks any real, peer-to-peer local engagement.

Leaving home should be about self-discovery. The adventure of adopting another language, culture and community is transformative because it requires a new level of awareness and trust outside of our own personal circle. Young adults want and need more confidence and greater life experiences to anchor them to a deeper and more honest understanding of the world and their place in it. A 16 year old is just two years from facing the world on their own, moving to unfamiliar places and engaging with a mix of unknown people. Are they prepared? Click here to learn why immersion and being bilingual prepares young adults for real world engagement.
Conservation from Ridge to Reef: Travel to Belize
Students are invited to join me for a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience to Belize in March 2023!

Experience Belize’s natural beauty as you help preserve it. Go with the (literal) flow as you travel from the mountains to the ocean to explore the interconnectedness of Belize’s freshwater and marine ecosystems. Contribute to ongoing efforts to decrease erosion through reforestation, check out climate-smart practices used by local farmers, and see the human impact on oceans firsthand during a beach cleanup.

Please attend a virtual mandatory parent meeting on Tuesday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. to learn about why this tour is important right now, travel scholarships, risk-free enrollment, student safety, and more trip details.

You must RSVP to receive the virtual meeting link. Click here to RSVP. For questions, please contact Camille Erskine. *Please note this is a non-school affiliated event.*
