Santa Cruz County reels off 3 film festivals
Are you desperate for some meaningful and provocative shows to watch? Luckily, there are three virtual film festivals going on right now.
After 18 years, the Reel Work Labor Film Festival in Santa Cruz will not let its tradition be defeated by COVID-19. On Friday evenings, from 6-8 pm, you can watch Classic Labor Films from past festivals on Comcast Channel 27, Charter Channel 73 or
live-stream programming
.
Also, this year’s 2020 Festival Selections can be viewed weekly on your own, then followed up by a Zoom Discussion with the filmmakers and others on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm. Go to
http://reelwork.org/
The Watsonville Film Festival has also gone online with select films and online activities and discussions. Check out their films at
http://watsonvillefilmfest.org/
They are currently streaming the docu-thriller, “The Infiltrators,” a true story of a group of DREAMers who infiltrate a shady for-profit detention center.
The first local festival to go online, the Jewish Film Festival, continues to provide lively films that are followed by Sunday Zoom discussions. Contact
SCJFFinfo@gmail.com
for information.
While we may not be able to travel outside our homes, these festivals can allow us to visit worlds beyond and provide for thoughtful reflection.

County Covid-19 Report
Coronavirus testing for all without a doctor’s referral has been available for the last several weeks at Ramsay Park in Watsonville. To get tested, you need to register online and fill out a questionnaire that includes various health related questions as well as health insurance information, although no one will be refused testing for lack of funds. After submitting the questionnaire, within 72 hours you receive a message and an appointment. Curious about the procedure, I filled out the forms and got an appointment for a week later.
Santa Cruz County Health Department regularly releases local data online. As more people get tested, the data should better reflect what is happening in our area. One interesting anomaly to date has been the gender of people who have tested positive in our county: 44% male, 56% female and 1% other.

Grannie Moonbeam – Nettle Tea
For bouts of stomach-churning anxiety, nettle tea is a good antidote. Bring 8 cups of fresh water to a boil. Stir in ½ cup dried nettle leaves, turn down heat, and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat, and let sit for 30 minutes. Strain into a pitcher and refrigerate. Drink as needed.
Dried nettle leaves, Urtica dioica, can be bought in bulk at Staff of Life, 1266 Soquel Ave. in Santa Cruz.

W
e the People of Santa Cruz County.....
Over time, our county has grown more stratified and divided with many people feeling left out. Housing affordability and low wages are two obvious factors. Many groups and individuals in Santa Cruz County work tirelessly to make our county a better place for everyone. These people work on the environment, housing, economic justice, criminal justice, disability rights, immigrant rights, racial justice, transportation, workers’ rights, education reform, electoral politics and more. Often, one group doesn’t know what another is doing. The Serf City Times is dedicated to serving as a clearinghouse for those issues by letting you know what is going on and how you can support them and the county. This is the first issue and following issues, at this point, will come out every two weeks. This is not a profit-making enterprise. All work is volunteer.
