A Message From Our President

With God at the center of each day, the colorful shades of joy, love, peace, and happiness will be in our lives and the lives of the people we touch.

Catholic School's Celebration
January 26 - February 3, 2017

Our CSW celebration kicked off this morning with our energetic  Student Pep Rally.  What a great way to start as this event is always a lot of fun for our students and staff alike!

For your convenience, you may again access the link to all the events and activities for CSW by CLICKING HERE.
Catholic Schools Week Mass
Please join us for our Catholic Schools Week Mass tomorrow, Friday, January 27 at 9:30 a.m. in the Student Activity Center. Our main presider will be Fr. Jerry Horan, concelebrated with Fr. Jim, Fr.Ted and Fr. Thomas. Everyone is welcome.

Plan to arrive earlier and join other parents as they pray the Rosary before Mass beginning at 8:45 in Extended Care. For your convenience, we do have parking in the neighborhood on this Mass day, but NO PARKING in the Memorial Health Care parking lot.

As a reminder, this is a Formal Uniform day for all students Grades TK - 8.

Missionary Childhood Association Collection at Mass
At each of our school-wide Masses the students of St. Junipero Serra support Missionary Childhood Association by making a small donation into our collection baskets. These monies do not go unnoticed as we serve the poorest children around the world. Thank you for remembering to support this ministry as we live "A Catholic Faith Filled & Missionary Spirit" through service to homeless in our community.

CSW  Service Project

The Gift of Warmth, Like God's Love, Has You Covered From Head to Toe

Please join our school-wide service project during Catholic Schools Week by donating beanies, scarves, gloves, and socks for men, women and children of all sizes. All items will be collected in homerooms and distributed to Illumination Foundation which assists the homeless in Orange County. Your support of this service project to help those in need will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Traffic Reminder
We know it is sometimes hard to get back into a routine after a break, and our Christmas break was no exception! During morning drop-off, we are finding that a number of students are not quite prepared to exit their vehicle in a timely manner. Parents, if you could please assist us by making sure your students are already wearing their socks, shoes, jackets, and other clothing items before leaving home, along with having their lunches/books/backpacks handy and ready to grab as they leave the vehicle, we would greatly appreciate it. This will help to speed up the morning drop-off traffic which will benefit everyone. Thank you.

Dear Kindergarten Parents,

You may be wondering why the Renaissance STAR Early Literacy and Math reports do not have the same information on them. When STAR Math and Reading tests were normed, Renaissance did not include kindergarten students in the norming samples. As a result, STAR Math and Reading assessments cannot provide norm-referenced scores such as percentile rank for those assessments.  Renaissance does provide scaled scores.  However, the scaled scores for STAR Math do not provide benchmark scores for kindergarten.

The Scaled Score (SS) is useful for comparing student performance over time and across grades. A scaled score is calculated based on the difficulty of questions and the number of correct responses. Because the same range is used for all students, scaled scores can be used to compare student performance across grade levels. STAR Math scaled scores range from 0 to 1400. All norm-referenced scores are derived from the scaled score.

We will be using the kindergarten STAR Math scaled scores to look for growth over time.  The administration of the test in January is to develop a baseline score. We anticipate overall growth on the May assessment.

If you have questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected]
Calendar Reminder

As indicated on the School Calendar, tomorrow,  Friday, January 27, is a minimum day. Please plan accordingly. Extended Care is available as usual.

There are still ways to support this event...

Visit the Giving Garden at Open House

There will also be two Giving Garden "stations" in the PEB for those families who are unable to make it over to the SAC.

St. Teresa's Treats
As the children heard on SerraVision earlier in the week, they can model St. Teresa of Calcutta to be God's little pencils right here in our very own community.  They have the opportunity to support their fellow students on Sunday during Open House. For a $5.00 donation to support the Tuition Assistance funds for both St. Serra and the Marian Alliance, the students will receive a special reminder with St. Teresa's words with a functional twig pencil to remind them to be God's pencil and allow Him to work through them.

St. Junipero Serra Catholic School presents the documentary film, SCREENAGERS on Tuesday, February 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Activity Center.

FOR MORE ABOUT THE FILM  CLICK HERE

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time-friction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids' development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
