Tuition Assistance Appeal

This past Saturday night, the St. Serra community gathered at Anchor Ball to help raise funds for the school in many areas.  One of the most important areas that needs support is Tuition Assistance. CLICK HERE  to watch a video about this program.

Despite efforts in keeping tuition down, including not raising tuition at all for the 2017-2018 school year, the need for tuition assistance continues to rise.  In the past 3 years, the number of families and students in need has increased by 12%.  Last year almost 10% of the SJSC student body received financial assistance in some capacity.

Through our continued fundraising efforts, we strive to raise the necessary funds - but the need is always greater.  We raised over $118,000 on Saturday, but we are not done.    If you were not at Anchor Ball, please join with us in trying to reach our goal of $145,000 by June 1 to secure the necessary level of funding for this year's applicants.

You CAN make a difference! Every dollar raised helps a child stay here at St. Serra next year.

If you prefer, you may send in a check to the Advancement Department with Tuition Assistance written in the memo.

Thank you in advance for your support of those in need within our community.

Congratulations to the Karimi family who won the Anchor Ball Tuition Assistance incentive raffle.  They will enjoy a week-long stay in a beautiful beach house in Newport Beach compliments of the O'Brien family!
Marian Mass Tomorrow, Friday, May 26
Please join us for our Annual May Crowning & Marian Mass tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in the Student Activity Center as we witness this beautiful sacrament for our Second Grade students. Mass will be celebrated by Father Reynold Furrell of Holy Trinity Parish. The Second Grade Communicants will also lead us through the Rosary Prayer.

This is a formal uniform day for ALL students except for TK and Kindergarten. Parking is available in the neighborhood but NOT in the Memorial Health Care parking lot. Once again we will be having a collection at the entrance to Mass for the Missionary Childhood Association, so please encourage your children to do an extra chore around the house so they are able to bring in some change to donate to those in need.

Immediately following Mass, plan on visiting with Mrs. Trudell, Mrs. Tipton , Mrs. Reiss and fellow parents at the final PTO Parent Fellowship and Coffee Social in the SJSC Courtyard.
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) at St. Serra Grows
As we prepare for our new facility, we encourage our students to participate in one or both of these STEAM related programs:

St. Serra's First Annual Robotics Summer Camp
Incoming 5th - 8th grade students are invited to be a part of St. Serra's LEGO Robotics Summer camp hosted by Santa Margarita Catholic High School's award winning Robotics Team.

Powered by the LEGO Mindstorms Education EV3 Base Set and software, students will explore the exciting world of robotics and engineering. Combining the versatility of the LEGO building system and intuitive drag-and-drop programming software, this adventure will have students working in teams, making friends, and creating robots from day one. Please see the flyer in today's Weekly Envelope (grades 4 - 7) for more information.
Instrumental Music Program Coming to SJSC
We are planning to start an instrumental music program beginning this fall. Paul Effman Music serves several schools throughout the area and is pleased to bring this program to St. Serra. Students in grades 3-8 (for band) and grades 1-8 (for Violin) are eligible to enroll. If this program would be of interest to you and your children, please  CLICK HERE to express your interest and  for additional information

2017 Tree of Remembrance Ornaments

Each year St. Serra offers the Memorial Ornament program to our families.  Ornaments can now be purchased to memorialize your loved ones that have gone home to our Lord.

The artwork is always provided by one of our current Seventh-grade students. Each student submits a drawing and an essay of their vision of Heaven. A winner is selected by our President, Mrs. Trudell and the Memorial Committee. We are happy to announce that C. Gasper's beautiful design was selected for our 2017 Memorial Ornament.

At the end of October, all ornaments purchased this year will be hung on a Tree of Remembrance, displayed in the entry lobby, and blessed prior to the Memorial Mass held on All Saints Day, November 1. The ornaments remain on the tree for the entire month of November. All ornaments will then be sent home with your student prior to Christmas break should you wish to hang them on your Christmas tree at home.

The ornaments are $30 each. Ornaments must be ordered by September 15 for participation in the November 2017 Mass of Remembrance. Please contact Cindy Carpino at ext. 239 with any questions.

Purchase ornaments on-line to pay via credit card, or download the pdf order form and send it in to the Advancement Office with your check made payable to Serra Catholic School.
Congratulations Serra Bear Super Stars!
Coach Marlon Woolforde's St. Serra Track & Field team, placed 6th overall, and 3rd overall for Grades 1-4, at the PAL Championships last Saturday!  Congratulations to all of our Bears that participated on a hot weekend achieving new personal, school, and PAL Meet records along the way. A few of our Bears also competed the next day in Costa Mesa at the SCMAF Orange County Championships, unbelievably setting more records and advancing to the SCMAF Southern California championships in June! Talk about SerraStrong!

Congratulations also to the St. Serra 4th-grade Street Hockey team on placing 3rd in the Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. Hockey Shootout this past Saturday! According to Coach Lewis and Coach Rodriguez, the team showed incredible spirit, tenacity and sportsmanship. In addition, our Boys Volleyball and Coed Soccer teams showed dedication and determination this season and were great representatives of St. Serra sportsmanship.

It has been an amazing year for all of our SJSC Sports teams. I wish to thank personally the dedicated team coaches and parent volunteers for being true role models who always give so generously of their time and talent. Because of them, our sports programs are growing; our athletes are developing confidence, improving their talents and building life-long friendships along the way.

A huge thank you to all of our Serra Bear athletes who showed their school spirit by working and playing hard throughout the season and also for their steadfast determination and dedication to their team. We are so proud of you all. GO, BEARS!

Preparing iPads for End of Year Collection
As we prepare for the end of the year, here is some important information on how we will be collecting the student iPads from our students. If you have purchased your student's iPad, additional information will be forwarded to you directly on how to prepare for its removal from our management software and when to expect delivery of the iPad.

Collection Schedule
The days listed below will be the one and only opportunity that we will be collecting the iPad and accessories from the students at the specified grade levels. If your student will not be in school on the date listed, please contact Jana Chantarapan at [email protected] to schedule a time when the iPad and accessories can be returned. Families who do not return the iPad on the date listed or schedule an alternate collection time, will be billed for the cost of each iPad ($213).
  • Friday, June 1 - Eighth Grade
  • Monday, June 5 - Grades Three and Four
  • Wednesday, June 7 - TK and Kindergarten
  • Thursday, June 8 - Grades One, Two, Five, and Six
  • Friday, June 9 - Seventh Grade
Backing up the iPad
Student iPads will be wiped before they are turned in, so it is important to ensure the iPad has been backed-up to iCloud, Google Drive archived (if not returning), and files transferred if desired before their collection date. Students will not have the opportunity to retrieve data from an iPad after it is wiped if they have not backed up their device.
  • CLICK HERE for how to manually back-up to iCloud if necessary
  • Students who are graduating or not returning to St. Junipero Serra Catholic School can archive their files and documents in their Google Drive by utilizing Google Takeout. CLICK HERE if you wish to review these instructions. This is only necessary if you are not returning to the school next year.
  • Beginning May 19, we will remove the restriction from the student iPads prohibiting iPads from connecting to a home computer. With the removal of this restriction, students and their parents may now synchronize the iPad to iTunes on a home computer, or transfer documents from the iPad to a home computer.
Students will be responsible for returning the following items:
  • iPad with the school-issued case
  • Protective shield

  • School-issued charging block*
  • School-issued cable*

*Apple products MJ262LL/A (power adapter) and MD818AM/A (lightning to USB cable) are acceptable, even if not original school-issued equipment
If an item is not returned when the iPad is collected, or the incorrect item is returned, an invoice will be sent home to the parents through our Business Office. We will also be evaluating the condition of the iPads when they are returned. Families will be responsible for the repair of any iPad which has a cracked screen or is not in a condition to be returned to the leasing company without penalty.

Please email [email protected]  if you have any questions.
