Succeed.

Catholic Schools Week Mass
Tomorrow, Friday 25 at 9:30 in the Student Activity Center
We are so excited for the start of Catholic Schools Week with this very special annual tradition.  We are honored to have  The Most Reverend Thanh Thai Nguyen, Auxiliary Bishop of Orange celebrate his first mass at St. Junipero Serra!  Everyone is welcome.

Plan to arrive earlier and join other parents as they pray the Rosary in our chapel before Mass beginning at 8:30 a.m. For your convenience, we do have parking in the neighborhood on this Mass day, but NO PARKING in the Memorial Health Care parking lot. Please remember to be courteous and respectful of our neighbors when parking in the neighborhood.

As a reminder, this is a Formal Uniform day for all students Grades 1-8.

MISSIONARY CHILDHOOD ASSOCIATION COLLECTION AT MASS
At each of our school-wide Masses the students of St. Junipero Serra support Missionary Childhood Association by making a small donation into our collection baskets. These monies do not go unnoticed as we serve the poorest children around the world. Thank you for remembering to support this ministry as we live "A Catholic Faith Filled & Missionary Spirit" through service to the poor.

EDUCATIONAL COST ASSITANCE 2019-2020
It is a part of our mission and vision to provide a Catholic Education within the boundaries of our four parishes for all those who desire to be a part of St. Junipero Serra Catholic School. St. Serra is so grateful for the sacrifices our many families make to send their children to our Catholic School. We are also very appreciative of the significant number of benefactors who contribute to our Educational Cost Assistance program on a regular basis.

We want all current families to be able to remain at SJSC should financial issues present themselves, therefore we will once again offer educational cost assistance to those who qualify through our blind, third-party process. Please note that it is important to your application process that you remain an active parishioner at your parish.

Once again this year, we will be working with FACTS, our online administrator for managing our educational cost assistance application. Please  CLICK HERE  for more information and to access our Online Financial Aid Assistance Application.

Due to limited funds, we encourage you to submit your application and upload all of your documents early. Please note that only applications completed by the deadline will be considered.  Deadline for submission of completed applications is Sunday, March 31, 2019.

Please contact Marjorie Kollen in the Advancement Office at ext.139 or via email at [email protected] should you have any questions.

iGen: Understanding the Smartphone Generation Resources for Parents
In Dr. Twenge's talk last Monday at St. Juliana's Catholic School in Fullerton on "iGen", we were given much information on the generation that has had iPhones available to them through their adolescence. Dr. Twenge has done extensive research on this generation in relation to the effects of technology. Her talk gave us great insight into the importance of face-to-face conversation and relationship building between adults and children. It is a priority of ours, as teachers of the faith in partnership with you, our parents, to provide a safe, structured place for this to occur at school and at home. We have attached two resources for you that you may find helpful.
  • "iGen" Resource Page: Offers a number of additional resources that can assist in exploring this subject further.
  • A Family Calendar from the TECH-WISE folks at Barna. This calendar is offered by BARNA to help families to approach technology with intentionally and to foster conversations for parents and children about managing technology in our lives.

Renaissance STAR score reports are posted electronically for our parents. To access your child's most recent scores, please go to  https://hosted321.renlearn.com/274505  (do not use the Home Connect link)

Type To LEARN 4 - Keyboarding
We encourage you to log on with your child and explore this wonderful resource!

St. Junipero Serra Catholic School is pleased to continue offering Type to Learn 4 as its instructional keyboarding program for Grades 1-8. TTL4 has engaging lessons that include graphics and activities with multiple opportunities for practice, remediation and goals for success. Directions for each activity are read to the students, and they receive an accuracy and speed report at the end of each lesson.

Many students are already familiar with this program, as it was previously taught in the SJSC technology lab. This year, students in Grades 1-4 will have the opportunity to use TTL4 in the classroom and are encouraged to practice keyboarding at home. Although students in Grades 5-8 will not have formal classroom instruction, they are also encouraged to practice the program at home. It is recommended that students spend 10-15 minutes, 3-4 times per week on TTL4.

If your child is in Grades 1-8, be on the lookout for a parent letter in the Monthly Envelope on February 7, which outlines the program and includes your child's login credentials.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEALTH ROOM REGARDING ILLNESS
In the past few weeks we have noticed a rise in flu cases (especially stomach flu) and other contagious illnesses at St. Serra and in our local community. The symptoms of the flu include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, headache and muscle aches. It can take from 5-7 days to recover.

In order to stop the spread of contagious illnesses, it is vital that you do not send your child to school sick. Children taking prescribed medication must take a full round of the medication before they return to school. Our school policy states that students must be fever free (99.6 and above is considered a fever) for 24 hours and no longer contagious before returning to school. If your child has the stomach flu, they must stay home for 24 hours after the vomiting has stopped. Please make sure your child feels well enough to attend school.

Please remind your children of the following flu prevention guidelines:
  • Hand washing is crucial in preventing germs from spreading. Wash hands regularly with warm water and soap. If soap and water are not accessible, use hand sanitizer.
  • Children should be reminded to cover their cough/sneeze and use a tissue.
  • Do not share food or drinks. Drink plenty of fluids.
  • It is highly recommended that children take a daily multivitamin.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Flu shots are recommended.
If your child has been diagnosed with a contagious illness e.g. flu, strep throat, pink eye, please notify the Health Room as soon as possible. Children who have been hospitalized must have a doctor's note before they return to school.

If the Health Room calls to report that your child is sick or injured, our policy states that you must pick your child up within 45 minutes of being called. If you are unable to pick your child up within the specified time frame, you will need to contact someone on your emergency form to pick up your child.

We have this policy in place not only for the health and safety of your children, but also for the well-being of our teachers and staff.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
