A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT TRUDELL
During this month of May that honors our Blessed Mother, Mary, the St. Serra community supports the rebuilding of the Cathedral of Notre Dame

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., has set up a fund to help the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris rebuild after the recent devastating fire.

In addition to our prayers for the people of France, the Diocese of Orange is directing those who want to contribute to rebuilding the Cathedral of Notre Dame to directly contact

The proceeds of every donation will be used to support the Cathedral of Notre Dame and those affected by this tragedy.

Food For Friends
Schools (Almost) Out - Hunger's Not!

Next Friday, May 10, we will conclude our monthly  Food For Friends collection for this year, assisting South County Outreach Food-bank and the parish of Santiago de Compostela by helping them prepare for the long summer months.

Summer break can mean fun in the sun, but it also means no school
breakfast or lunch for many children within our community. Let's pull together for this last drive and help these children by "Building-A-Breakfast", "Longing-For-Lunch" or " Snagging-A-Snack."  Please see the recommended list of items. There is also a copy of the flyer in today's Monthly Envelope. We would like to extend a prayer of gratitude to our community for supporting this outreach program at St. Serra throughout the year in conjunction with the food banks associated with our parishes.

Thank you to our Scouts for again assisting with the collection.
Love for Laura's House Toy Drive
Celebrating Mother's and Their Children  -  Monday, May 13 - Friday, May 17

St. Serra will host a new toy drive to support Laura's House a women's shelter which promotes life and challenges domestic violence. Amanda Duffy and Lyndsey Issa, two Santa Margarita Catholic H.S. students and Serra alumni, have created a new SMCHS club known as "Love for Laura's House." Their goal is to aid this women's shelter by providing them with much needed donations for their children and mothers.

Each Serra homeroom class will have a designated box to drop off new toys. A listing of suggested donations can be found by CLICKING HERE. There is also a copy of the flyer in today's Monthly Envelope. Thank you for remembering mothers and their children as we celebrate Our Blessed Mother and all mothers this month.

HELPFUL TEST TAKING NOTES:
  • Make sure your children have eaten well on test days. Studies suggest that good nutrition is related to improved attention and concentration.
  • Help your children by encouraging a good night's rest.
  • Ensure that your children make it to school on-time so that they do not miss any instructions and are allowed ample time to settle in and relax before the test begins.
  • Please do not schedule dental or doctor appointments on testing days.
  • Although it is important to let students know the tests should be taken seriously, it is also important not to increase their test-taking anxiety.

The Rebate office is looking for long-term volunteers. If you like a steady schedule and working with great people in a fun environment, please contact the Rebate Office.

MEMORIAL ORNAMENT PROGRAM

Each year St. Serra offers the Memorial Ornament program to our families. Ornaments can now be purchased to memorialize your loved ones that have gone home to our Lord.

The artwork is always provided by one of our seventh-grade students.   Each student submits drawings of their vision of heaven. A winner is selected by our
President, Mrs. Trudell and the Memorial Committee. We are happy to announce that Dominique O.'s beautiful design (at right) has been selected for our 2019 Memorial Ornament.

At the end of October, all ornaments purchased this year will be hung on the Tree of Remembrance, displayed in the entry lobby. They will be blessed prior to the Memorial Mass held on All Saints Day. The ornaments will remain on the tree for the entire month of November. All ornaments are then sent home with your student prior to Christmas break.

There are two options to purchase an ornament at the cost of $30 each. If you would like to pay by check, please  download an order form , print, complete and return it with a check attention to the Advancement office. Checks should be made out to SJSC. If you would like to pay with a credit card, please complete this online form .

Ornaments must be ordered by September 27, 2019 for participation in the November 2019 Memorial Mass. Please contact Mrs. Cindy Carpino at [email protected] or ext. 239 with any questions.

ESSENTIAL LEARNING SYSTEM (ELS)
Parent Information Meeting for 2019-2020.

A parent information meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. in the ELS lab, PEB room, 230.

ELS is a computerized, multi-sensory, interactive program that improves focus, strengthens information processing skills, and enhances a variety of academic skills (e.g., reading decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, and spelling). If your child is struggling with reading skills, lacks confidence in academics skills, has difficulty understanding or remembering information, takes a long time to complete schoolwork or homework, has limited independent learning skills, and/or benefits from additional academic support, ELS may help. ELS provides a fun environment where students strengthen their skills in a game-like format and earn points and prizes for their efforts. There are two after-school sessions available: 1:50-2:35 p.m. (for students in grades K through 2) and 2:50-3:40 p.m. (for students in grades 3 through Middle School). Students attend ELS 4 days per week (Monday - Thursday) for a minimum of one academic year. Please e-mail Dr. Lori Quigley [email protected] if you would like more information or to attend this informational meeting.
