Son of Seminary Professor Recalls Turbulent Years
|
|
Note from Bishop Hardy: This book is a great resource and look at the Missouri Synod and I highly recommend it.
A long-serving LCMS seminary professor has gathered his memories together into a 450-page book entitled "Surviving the Storms: Memoirs of David P. Scaer" in which he traces his life from his upbringing in Brooklyn through his 54 years as a professor in the LCMS at the Springfield and Fort Wayne seminaries. His late father Reverend Paul H. Scaer (+1967) was the lifelong pastor of an English District congregation, Trinity of Flatbush (now ELCA). With his father serving as Circuit Visitor of the York/New Jersey Metropolitan Circuit, the author was brought into contact with English District pastors George Beiderwieden, Vernon Schreiber, Paul Riedel, H. Armin Moellering, John H. Tietjen, John Damm and its presidents Hugo Kleiner and Harold Hecht. Scaer writes of his student days at Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis that were among the events leading up to and following its faculty walkout in February 1974.

Some chapters deal with issues that threatened to disrupt the LCMS and others speak of LCMS leaders at the time. An index allows the reader to easily find familiar people. An extensive bibliography lists his theological, devotional, homiletical, and exegetical writings.

Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elmhurst, IL has been pleased to be a part of 1-1-1 since last fall. At the voters' meeting when the concept was presented to the members, the question was asked, "Why wouldn't we do this? It's so simple!" It's simplicity and potential has truly made it an easy initiative to embrace. Redeemer has two boxes, one at the entrance to the sanctuary, and one on the way to our education annex, where everyone from the Sunday school children to the adults in Bible study can deposit their gifts. It's our joy to participate, knowing the the Lord, who can feed thousands with five loaves and two fish, can use even small offerings in ways beyond our understanding.

Your prayer concerns are important to the English District. When you submit a prayer request, with your permission, it will be posted in this weekly eNewsletter. The Bible's promise is true: "If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us" (1 John 5:14).
Pray with us: That God would protect and grant restored health for missionaries serving in the Dominican Republic (DR) and Latin America. The wife of one missionary in the DR was in the hospital for a week with dengue, and now their teenage son is in the hospital with dengue. Many others in the field have recently experienced viruses, headaches, falling, and even car accidents. We pray for strength and renewed vigor for all who are serving, so that God’s work in the mission field would not be hindered.

The English District Canada Corporation held their annual meeting at the Church of St. Mark Lutheran, Mississauga, ON. All English District congregations in Canada are members of the Canada Corporation and can be represented by 5 delegates at the annual meeting. The discussion of those gathered focused on Canadian church extension funding for congregations, setting the budget for next year, and reactivating the Canada Corporation Mission Team, which is tasked with encouraging member congregations to advance mission outreach in their ministry context. President/Bishop Hardy and Treasurer, Sally Naglich, attended the meeting via video conferencing and are included in the group shot of the elected board and congregation delegates in attendance.
