English District Missions

Our desire in the English District is to see churches planted “from the bottom up, not from the top down.” The article "De-centralized Church Planting in the LCMS (and the English District)" from the Mission Action Team explains more. Click here to read the full article.

Lifeline

We encourage congregations to reproduce and share the following message with your members. Click here for Lifeline's "Holy Week and Easter Triduum 2025" reproducible file in .pdf format. Click here for more information on Lifeline.

Note: For a brief but powerful meditation by Johann Gerhard on our sin and Christ’s Passion, see LCMS President Matt Harrison’s letter in the current Lutheran Witness, which may be accessed here.

*Quote from the Formula of Concord, Article II, Paragraph 10.

Bioethical dilemmas present complex challenges for pastors and other church leaders, requiring a response grounded in Scripture. To help equip them to navigate these critical issues, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis (CSL) and Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon (CUW) are offering a six-week virtual continuing education course, “Life and Death: A Confessional Framework for Pastoral Bioethics.” This course will cover essential bioethical topics, such as gender dysphoria, abortion, physician-assisted suicide and more, all viewed through a biblical lens.

The course will be taught via Zoom from 4-5:15 p.m. (CT) Tuesdays, April 29 through June 3, 2025. Click here for more information. Click here to register.

Church Worker (Student Loan) Debt Reduction Grants Available

The purpose of the English District Endowment Fund is to provide God's people with a unique opportunity to participate in a perpetual fund. This fund shall assist congregations and rostered workers alike. One aspect of the Endowment Fund currently being offered to Rostered Church Workers is a grant for financial assistance with their student loans. Those rostered workers who are currently serving (called workers) in an English District LCMS congregation or school are eligible to apply for this education indebtedness grant.

For a Church Worker (Student Loan) Debt Reduction Grant we ask that you complete an Application for Church Worker Transitional Assistance. These forms are available on our District website. If you would like to donate to the English District Endowment Fund, click here.

If you have any questions, please contact Rev. Derek Mathers at 1-800-755-9335. Deadline for applications is May 12, 2025.

Life Together as Synod

Every rostered church worker, congregation, school and organization of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) agrees to uphold and assist in carrying out the 10 objectives found in Article III of the Synod Constitution. These “spell out the core of who we are and what we do together as Synod,” says LCMS Chief Mission Officer Rev. Kevin D. Robson, as he introduces and explains objectives 1–5.

Convention Opportunity for Youth

English District congregations have a wonderful opportunity to encourage their high school youth (ages 14-18) to apply to attend our 58th District Convention as youth delegates. We believe that providing our young people insight into convention operations alongside our voting delegates, advisory delegates, and guests will help them understand discipleship as a beautiful collaboration between baptized believers, the Holy Spirit, and God’s Word. Travel, lodging, and meals are all covered for each youth delegate. The application deadline is Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Click here for more information.

In Our Churches

Prince of Peace, Mesquite, NV

The saints at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church continue to proclaim the Gospel through love of our neighbors. Wendy K., a member of the congregation, created a directory of her golf group at Sun City to help newcomers connect, feel welcome, and remember the names of other golfers.

Faith, Overgaard, AZ

The congregation of Faith Lutheran Church, served by Pastor Rodney Schmeltz, recently welcomed Sue into membership.

Christ Our Redeemer, Allen Park, MI

Angelica, Allen Park, MI

For the third consecutive year, ladies from the congregations of Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Angelica Lutheran Church gathered together to make over 100 fleece blankets for their local chapter of Project Linus. Project Linus provides handmade blankets to children 0-18 in the United States who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. This project not only yielded blankets, but fellowship, friendship, and an enjoyable lunch.

Christ, West Olive, MI

Pastor Chris Nuttelman, who serves Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and Hope Lutheran Church, will be officiating at the marriage of Sarah and Nicholas. Sarah is a lifelong LCMS member, who began bringing her now fiancé to church. As a result, Nick was baptized and confirmed last year. We pray for God's blessings on this couple and their upcoming marriage.

In Our Schools

Redeemer, Oakmont, PA

On a very cold day in February, eight high school students from Redeemer Lutheran School participated in the Pittsburgh Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics. The team raised an impressive total of $1,227!

2025 LCMS Youth Gathering

The English District is passionate about youth ministry and excited for the upcoming LCMS Youth Gathering.  Those who have attended an LCMS Youth Gathering in the past surely remember the lasting friendships and spiritual growth that were fostered.  Six Flags in San Antonio, bowling and riverboat rides in New Orleans, and Universal Studios in Orlando have all been part of the history of Youth Gatherings.  Whether you participated as an attendee, leader, or chaperone, I’m confident those experiences still bring a smile to your face as they do to mine.

The young people in our English District who will attend the Youth Gathering in New Orleans this summer have raised funds for registration, travel, lodging, food, and all the other necessities that come with travel.  The average cost for each district youth is about $1000.  Unfortunately, many of these young people are unable to attend the English District Servant Event due to financial constraints. To help make the Event a reality for many, we have established an English District fund to be used exclusively for that purpose.

We request prayers that God will provide the necessary resources through His people.  We ask that you give prayerful consideration, as an individual or as a congregation, to support this endeavor.  Donations may be sent to the English District office (payable to English District LCMS, 33100 Freedom Road, Farmington, MI 48336-4030) or given online.  Please indicate on the check or online that your gift is for the English District Youth Gathering Fund.

Thank you for your prayers, donations, and continued support of English District youth.

God in all things without borders!
