Rev. Derek Mathers, Assistant to the Bishop and Mission Executive, met with Rev. Jonathan C. McCall and God's people at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Royalton, OH. Rev. Mathers described it as "an honor" to walk with the congregation as they navigate and understand their Congregational Assessment of Development/Decline Status (CADDS) report and to witness pastor and people together in mission. After worship, all enjoyed a meal and fellowship.

We read in Matthew 13:26, “So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.” You will likely recognize this passage as a snippet from the Parable of the Weeds. What is not mentioned in this story from Jesus is the condition of the soil. As we know, the weeds are the default setting for the soil because we grow in a fallen world.
The sources for weeds in our lives are easy to spot—our own sin and society’s influence on it, as sown by the enemy. There is only one source for the seed that grows into the grain, and that is the seed Himself, Jesus, the living Word of God. Our missions are a dispenser for that Seed, for those looking to live out from the weeds. Our Mission 1-1-1 dollars continue to serve this purpose alone, in places that find it difficult to receive the Way, the Truth, and the Life, by the grace of the Word and Sacraments. As Jesus says in John 14:6, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.”

Redeemer, North Tonawanda, NY
Redeemer Lutheran Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tonawanda, NY, hosted Vacation Bible School this past week. Children and volunteers stepped back into ancient Rome through God’s Word, enjoying activities that included chariot races. God was present, blessing everyone who participated.

Ultimately, the reason pastors and other church leaders study theology is to care for souls. But, for the past century, the care of troubled people has been increasingly delegated to vocations like psychiatrists, psychologists, and other professional counselors, often to the exclusion of pastors and their spiritual care of souls.
How can the church reclaim its voice and its proper role of caring for souls struggling with mental health issues? What is the distinctive role of pastors and other church workers as compared to secular, or even Christian, counselors?
