Prince of Peace, Mesquite, NV

The congregation of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church held its second Vacation Bible School (VBS), "An Epic Australian Adventure: An Unforgettable Journey with Jesus." The congregation's 2024 VBS started with 2 students and ended with 5. This year, they started with 12 students on Monday, reached a high of 17 students on Wednesday, and completed their VBS with 16 students on Friday. A local woman from Australia lent the VBS staff a 5-foot stuffed kangaroo (with joey) and a stuffed koala bear with a baby koala. She also provided koala bear pencil clip-on critters to enhance the children's experience. Four of the VBS students attended Sunday Divine Service and Sunday School.

To make it accessible to potential missionary candidates, the total cost for both ground expenses and airfare is $1,000. If this is of interest to you, please apply today – the deadline to start the application process is August 17th. Please also feel free to share this opportunity with any LCMS folks you know who might make good missionaries.

Giving Thanks

In June, a tornado hit Camp Lutherhoma in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Oklahoma District President, Pastor Dave Nehrenz, shared the following.

The camp was filled with grade school campers. By God's grace, no one was injured! The Lord be praised! Camp counselors did a fantastic job getting kids to the safe buildings. All the campers were sent home and the staff had to cancel camping for the coming week.

The tornado dropped directly on top of the camp and kept going up and down. The Lutheran Emergency Response Team (LERT), led by Don Kelle, worked diligently to help with cleanup. People showed up from everywhere with chainsaws to assist. Some of them had just wrapped up their work of cleanup at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. Our district had just purchased a skid that is now being used there.

Pastor Ross Johnson, the LCMS Disaster Response Director, responded to the camp, as did I. Hundreds of high school and college students have worked as counselors there over the past 35 years, including three of our kids.

Prayers of thanks to our Lord that there were no injuries! It is amazing. Huge trees fell right in between cabins where kids were asleep.

Pray for the camp executive staff: John, Joan and Erin Busch and Nikki Boyd. They are wonderful leaders and mentors in the midst of stress and distress.

We join with Pastor Nehrenz in giving thanks and praise for the Lord's hand of safety for the campers and staff.
