Set Apart To Serve

For over a century every Synodical Convention has experienced discussion and efforts to increase, promote, and improve church worker recruiting. Currently the LCMS Office of Pastoral Education is updating and expanding its Set Apart to Serve (SAS) ministry that includes resources that you can read, download, print, and use today, to have this conversation with friends and family members, young and old. There are many who are chosen by Jesus. Many just don’t know that yet, but you can be a part of this amazing discovery. Learn more here.

Lifeline

As we approach this fall's election in the United States, abortion is front and center in the national debate. In addition to our usual prayer and conversation, we have a number of formal opportunities to proclaim the sanctity of life in the public square with our Gospel-motivated voices for life. State Marches for Life will be held in Pennsylvania (September 23, Harrisburg), New Jersey (September 26, Trenton) and Ohio (October 4, Columbus). In addition, the Life Chain prayer gathering will be held on October 6 in various cities throughout the United States and Canada. As we get closer to the election, we expect more events will be scheduled--we will share that information as we receive it. If you have an event in your community, please let us know as well, so that we can help you get the word out. You may find event details at LCMS March for Life and other valuable resources at the LCMS Life Ministry page. Know that the members of your English District Lifeline Team thank God for you and all He is doing through you, and we pray His richest blessings on your proclamation of the sanctity of life from fertilization to forever in your congregations and communities.

Prayer Requests

We pray for the family of Sharon Alice (Brandt) Willweber who entered eternal glory on June 23, 2024. Mrs. Willweber was the wife of Pastor Emeritus Lloyd Willweber (CNH), and grandmother of Cory Willweber who will be serving as vicar at Messiah, Danville, CA in the coming year.

We pray for the family of Judith Anderson who recently went home to our Lord and Savior. Judith served on the English District Board of Directors from 2006-2015.

We pray for Dave and Peggy Oke, that God will grant them peace as they navigate recent medical concerns.

District daily prayers for September 2024 are located on our website.

Your prayer concerns are important to the English District. If you have a prayer request you would like shared in this newsletter, email the district office.

In Our Churches

Redeemer, Oakmont, PA

Redeemer Lutheran Church recently welcomed the Kooser family (Adam, Melissa, and their son) into the congregation. Rev. Adam Koontz baptized Adam during a very joyous occasion. We pray that God will continue to bless Redeemer Lutheran and the Kooser family in their faith walk. God be praised!

Christ, West Olive, MI

Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, a new church start, recently received the donation of a Johannus organ. Alisha Schimm, a rostered Director of Parish Music and kantor at the church says, “We are grateful to receive this 'new to us' organ after a year of using an electronic keyboard. This generous gift will allow anyone playing to utilize all the tones and colors that organs are known for, which will enhance and support our congregational singing and worship life.”

ICYMI…The Lutheran Witness spotlighted Christ Evangelical in the August edition of its “Walking Together” series.

Ascension of Christ, Beverly Hills, MI

Ascension of Christ Lutheran Church and Ascension Early Child Care Center recently had a big day of celebration. One of their childcare center students received the gift of new life in Christ through the heavenly washing of water and the Word. The congregation also installed a new deaconess intern. Deaconess Intern Melissa Harnden will continue her formation as a future church worker through her works of mercy and service to the members of the congregation and the students and families of our childcare center. We pray for continued blessings on the newly baptized and the Deaconess Intern.

Holy Trinity, Albion, PA

Trinity, Erie, PA

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church worked together at the Dan Rice Days in Gerard, PA selling “Heavenly” fries and sharing the Gospel. Pictured here are Pastor Michael Taylor and Pastor Travis Schmidt along with Deaconess Carolyn Lindenmuth and Deaconess Intern Jennifer Schmidt.

Holy Cross Chapel, Pittsburgh, PA

The Holy Cross Evangelical-Lutheran Chapel congregation recently hosted their monthly Community Dinner followed by Catechetical Vespers. Members enjoyed a wonderful dinner and heard about God's Word for us in the fourth Commandment, allowing them to be fed and nourished both with food and God's Holy Word. Thanks be to God!
