1-1-1 for Missions
“There is power and strength in many giving a little!”

September 1, 2018- September 1, 2019. A year that hopefully will be remembered! Why? This was the first “model year” of “A Dollar for Missions!” The English District is showing what can be done when our congregations, YOU our people, are encouraged to gather a little for a GREAT/unified* goal. So how did we do after one year? $54,578.73 extra was gathered! Praise God for this! The two missions (Concordia Lutheran Mission in Myerstown, PA and the Dominican Republic Lutheran Mission) selected  to receive funds from 1-1-1 will each receive approximately $27,275.

Dear people of God, what the English District is doing is still only a “model.” We were to show the others this could be done. From the very beginning it was our hope that other districts of the LCMS would follow the “model.” The LCMS in National Convention passed the resolution from our English District to encourage others to do the same! The “model” is growing! As more participate the dollars also grow. Thanks to all of our congregations and people giving that extra $1 a week! Join us! It matters!

Where will this “model” go? We SHOULD DREAM BIG! What if, while praying for workers, we earnestly recruit and fully fund the training and education of seminarians, teachers, missionaries, and then send workers into the harvest field that our Lord is preparing? Seeking the lost! Rejoicing over the found! You know what that means? More believers! More churches! More joy, here on earth and in Heaven! From this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus says, “I tell you, there is joy before  the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Please contact our District Mission Executive, Pastor  Derek Mathers   or
Pastor  Justin Laughridge , Chair of the Missions Council, with any questions.
Worker Wellness
The LCMS has weekly devotions for church workers focusing on wellness and encouragement. If you haven't been reading them, now is a good time to try them! This week's devotion can be found here .
RE:Vitality Visit
Several of our English District congregations are taking advantage of the Re:Vitality Congregational Self-Assessment tool offered by the Synod’s Office of National Mission through our District Mission Executive. It is three weeks of promotion followed by three weeks for members and attenders of the congregation to participate in the online inventory. In support of our congregations who select to make use of this tool, Pastor Derek Mathers will come to meet with the leadership and help them understand the report they receive.

Camp Restore Detroit
What is Camp Restore Detroit?
Camp Restore was originally started in New Orleans in response to Hurricane Katrina. In 2016, Camp Restore began looking at options for expanding to Detroit. They found Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, and Camp Restore Detroit welcomed their first group of campers in 2017. Since then, we have been hosting camper groups of all ages, year-round!

The work accomplished at Camp Restore Detroit is divided into three categories: human care, environmental, and construction. Something super important to us at Camp Restore Detroit is operating from an asset-based ministry approach in all our work and ministry. After a natural disaster, such as a hurricane, the appropriate response is often needs-based because the people need food, clothing, and shelter to survive. The devastation that occurred in Detroit didn't happen overnight and doesn't have a simple solution. Providing our community with things will not truly "fix" the problem. Instead, we strive to build relationships with our community and partner with community leaders to address underlying problems and create a long-lasting difference. We want to expand on and encourage the good already happening in the community and take our lead from the amazing community leaders and partners. This is the model we strive to use for all our projects and outreach. If you want to be part of restoring hope in Detroit visit our website!
