Servant to Servant

Greetings!

September 4, 2026

Bishop's Visit

Bishop Jeff Miskus presided over the retirement service for Rev. Tom Engler at Lutheran Church of the Prince of Peace, Menomonee Falls, WI. Congregation members coordinated a wonderful meal and fellowship following the service. Among those in attendance were Circuit Visitor Rev. Fred Reaman and English District Board of Directors Chairman Rev. Luke Zimmerman.  We join in wishing Rev. Engler Godspeed as he enters this new chapter.

Assistant to the Bishop Visit

Rev. Derek Mathers, Assistant to the Bishop and Mission Executive, presided over the installation of Rev. Carl Kaye at Sherman Oaks Lutheran Church, Sherman Oaks, CA. God's people rejoiced and welcomed their new pastor and his wife Grace.

Rev. Mathers also had an opportunity to visit Rev. Victor Manuel De La Rosa and the congregation of Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church, Mission Hills, CA.

Kathy Stanis Set to Retire

In 2005, Kathy, while working full-time as Marketing Director for a wholesale florist in Pittsburgh, PA, also volunteered as part-time church secretary at Hope Lutheran Church, McMurray, PA. She joyfully produced the weekly bulletin and monthly newsletter. In 2007, Hope, Mc Murray voted to merge with Our Savior Lutheran Church, Mt. Lebanon, PA. Following the merger, Kathy resigned as the Marketing Director and then began her full-time church work as the office administrator of the newly formed Peace Lutheran Church, McMurray, PA.

In 2015 Kathy‘s pastor, Rev. Dr. Jamison Hardy, was elected as the Bishop/President of the English District and he asked her to be his Administrative Assistant. When Rev. Jeffrey Miskus became the Interim District President in 2024 and subsequently elected to be the District President in 2025, Kathy felt incredibly blessed to continue in her position as the District President’s Administrative Assistant (DPAA).

As a DPAA Kathy became a member of the DPAA Conference Planning Committee for the annual conference where all 35 DPAAs would learn the newest protocols, forms, and expectations of serving an LCMS District President. With Kathy’s involvement, the DPAAs also formed an incredible bond, which helped to strengthen them as a group and assist one another individually. As one of the chairpersons of the committee for the conference in 2019, the English District cohosted the DPAA Conference with the Michigan District in Ann Arbor, MI. It was well attended and an outstanding success.

After serving 11 years as the English District DPAA, Kathy will retire at the end of September. She plans to spend as much time as possible with her husband Paul. They will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary at the end of December.

We thank Kathy for her years of dedication and service. Even in retirement, Kathy will never stop serving the Lord. As her Confirmation verse states:

I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Psalm 16:8

Lumen Christi Volunteer Award

Albert Amling, School Ministry Executive for the English District, presented the Lumen Christi Volunteer Award to Mr. Darrel Hopkins of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lincoln, NE. Mr. Hopkins serves in various roles at Redeemer and represents so well the multitudes of lay people who serve their Lord and their congregation. Mr. Hopkins embodies the criteria for the Lumen Christi, the Light of Christ!

Lifeline

The autumn 40 Days for Life campaign will be taking place September 23 - November 1 in many of the communities served by English District congregations, including several in Ontario. Back in 2023, the LCMS Life Ministry developed "The Lord's Mercy Endures Forever: 40 Prayers for Life" for use at pro-life prayer vigils, marches for life, and other similar gatherings, and/or home devotions. This is a very useful resource which we highly recommend, and may be downloaded here.

The 2026 Body of Christ and the Public Square conference will be held at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church. The conference serves as an educational resource relative to religious liberty. It labors to equip citizens with an accommodationist understanding of Church and State, resulting in civil engagement aimed at living peaceful and quiet lives according to the tenets of faith (1 Tim. 2:2-6).

Sponsor a Seminarian

Through Concordia Seminary’s Adopt-A-Student Program, you can walk alongside specific pastoral or diaconal students as they prepare to serve The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and beyond. You’ll be personally paired with a student, correspond with him or her throughout the year, and know that your gift goes directly to their tuition — every dollar of it.

As Paul wrote, your gift is a “partnership in the gospel” — and your seminarian will tell you so themselves, in the personal notes and letters you will receive throughout the year. Thanks for considering this opportunity!

Concordia Seminary

Join Dr. R. Steven Notley, Dean of Religious Studies at Pillar College, Newark, NJ, and academic director of the El Araj Excavation Project, as he speaks on excavations regarding the location of Bethsaida, home of Peter, Andrew and Philip. This lecture will include the results of 10 seasons of excavations at Khirbet el Araj on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, the evidence unearthed for a Jewish fishing village, and the discovery of a legendary Byzantine basilica.
