Service Update

Notice to Howe Island residents,

It has become necessary to reduce the maximum number of vehicles

permitted on each crossing of the Howe Island County Ferry upon its

return from dry dock inspection. While the vessel’s maximum weight

capacity remains unchanged, on-deck vehicle lanes are reduced from

three to two until further notice.

This change comes after a complaint from a Howe Island resident to

Transport Canada. The complaint included pictures of the ferry fully

loaded and expressed a concern that there may not be enough room

on deck for all passengers to simultaneously open their vehicle doors

and evacuate in the event of an on-board emergency.

Transport Canada subsequently directed that more room be made

available on deck while the ferry is under way. We are aware that this

will impact all Howe Islanders.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation, which owns the vessel; and the

County of Frontenac, which operates the ferry service, remain

committed to serving the public. We are working together towards an

appropriate solution and we have requested a meeting with our

Member of Parliament to discuss options for a more reasonable

temporary solution. We ask that members of the public remain patient

and courteous to ferry staff.

Respectfully,

Rob Dillabough
