Dear Friend,
Happy Friday! This week I was in Washington, working hard for our CA-39 community. Here are the highlights:

Improving Access to STEM Education
As we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and work to get our economy back on track, we must ensure today’s students of all backgrounds can learn the skills needed to join our STEM workforce and tackle our nation’s greatest challenges. STEM programs that engage children outside the classroom can play a large role in bridging the gap in STEM education, growing our economy and boosting our nation's global competitiveness.
As a member of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, I am dedicated to improving access to STEM education. I have cosponsored and supported several House bills expanding STEM opportunities for students and early-career researchers during COVID-19, including:
- The Supporting Early-Career Researchers Act (H.R.144);
- The MSI STEM Achievement Act (H.R.210);
- The Rural STEM Education Act (H.R.2027); and,
- The Research Excellence through STEM Inclusion Act (H.R. 3809).

Promoting Accessibility for Veterans
Our district is home to more than 27,000 veterans from diverse backgrounds who faithfully served in the U.S. military. The Veterans and Family Information Act I worked on with Congressman Hakeem Jeffries will ensure that U.S. veterans and their caretakers whose first languages are not English are aware of and understand VA benefits by making all VA fact sheets available in the ten most commonly spoken languages in addition to English.

We must make sure our economy can continue to adapt and compete as we reopen communities. That's why I introduced the bipartisan MicroCap Small Business Investing Act of 2021 with Congressman Joe Neguse to incentivize investment and capital access for small business owners. This bill will broaden the diversity in the talent pool of venture capital firms and incentivize small business owners from low-income, underserved communities to grow their business or get back on their feet. I’ll continue to do all I can to create policies that foster innovation, economic opportunity and job growth.

Enforcing Important Sanctions
I asked U.N. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield at the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing what steps are being taken to enforce UN-imposed sanctions on the North Korean regime so it will stop modernizing its nuclear weapons program and oppressing its people.
Thank you Congresswoman Dina Titus for letting me use your mic! Watch here.

Running into Anaheim Hills Students
It made my day to see some Southern California faces in our nation's capital! It was great to run into students and teachers from Anaheim Hills with El Rancho Charter School.
While Capitol tours are still not open to the public, I encourage those from CA-39 visiting Washington, DC to reach out to my office. Visit my website to learn more.

I was honored to support legislation that makes Juneteenth a federal holiday. June 19 - Juneteenth - marks the day the last enslaved people were declared free following the end of the Civil War in 1865. The holiday celebrates dignity, unity, and our nation's ongoing pursuit to build a more perfect union and live up to our ideals of liberty and freedom for all. The bill passed the House with bipartisan support and the Senate unanimously. Watch President Biden sign the bill into law here and visit the National Archives website to view General Order No. 3, which informed the people of Texas that all individuals were now free (pictured above).

I joined with my colleagues to write to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi demanding that Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-05) be removed from her committee assignments on the House Committees on Foreign Affairs and on Education and Labor in light of her repeated alarming, inappropriate and antisemitic comments, most recently comparing the U.S. and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban.
Rep. Omar's continued involvement in her committees, including as a prominent member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sends a dangerous signal to our allies and our adversaries alike that the United States tolerates anti-Semitism, that we no longer believe in the long-term mission of supporting free peoples and free markets, and that we no longer remain committed to combatting acts of terror against the United States or our allies. It is the responsibility of the party’s leadership in the House of Representatives to hold accountable egregious words and actions made by Members of the party. Read the letter here.

Celebrating Flag Day & the U.S. Army's 246th Birthday
On Monday, we celebrated the stars and stripes and remembered that it is up to each of us to protect our nation's values the Flag represents. As President Ronald Reagan said, "freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction."
We also commemorated the 246th birthday of our incredible U.S. Army! I am so thankful to our soldiers past, present and future who answered the call to protect the United States and preserve our freedoms. We will always remember their service and sacrifice.
