From Paper to Progress Webinar Recording and FAQ

On Feb. 17, the Law Society hosted a webinar in partnership with Land Titles and Surveys Alberta. If you were unable to attend but are interested in the information, view a recording of the webinar or review the frequently asked questions from the Q&A period.

The webinar presentation is designed to be directly relevant to lawyers by providing practical insight into how land titles submission errors affect registration timelines and client outcomes, and how those risks can be mitigated through improved submission practices. It equips lawyers with up-to-date information on registry process changes, including queue management, refund processing, and Alberta Registries Land Online (ARLO) enhancements, while also outlining the transition toward a more electronic registration system.

New ALRI Publication: Hearing from Children in Court Proceedings under the Divorce Act, Family Law Act, and Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act

The Alberta Law Reform Institute (ALRI) has published Hearing from Children in Court Proceedings under the Divorce Act, Family Law Act, and Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, Research Paper 22. The paper does not recommend any legislative changes. It is intended to help users understand the ways in which the views of children affected by family court proceedings can be heard in Alberta.

This report describes the ways in which children may participate in proceedings under the Divorce Act, Family Law Act, and the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act. While children may have a legal right to be heard in court matters that affect them, legal rights are not the only reason to hear from children. Research shows that children want to participate without needing to take sides. Listening to the child’s views puts the focus on the child, can reduce conflict, and may potentially lead to a more satisfactory outcome.
