Big News for Small Classes: Class of 2022 Is the Largest in Our History
At Adelphi's 123rd Matriculation ceremony two weeks ago, we welcomed an extraordinary class and celebrated an amazing milestone—the 1,257 new students in the Class of 2022 comprise the largest and the most diverse in our University's history.

When Dr. David Machlis, our 2018 Teaching Excellence Award winner, addressed Adelphi's newest first-year students in his usual buoyant manner, he reminded them about what makes Adelphi so special: "Small classes allow students to interact with their professors." Dr. Machlis' booming voice and engaging teaching style would translate well to the large lecture halls that are standard for other universities, but Dr. Machlis has taught at Adelphi for decades—five to be exact (and then some). As he put it, "Can you imagine—51 years at the same institution!" In his own small classes, Dr. Machlis gets to know his students, offers them personal wisdom , personalized instruction and sometimes lunch, where he is both professor and chef.

Happily, what Dr. Machlis finds so special about Adelphi—the personalization of higher education—is reaching more and more students. Members of our Class of 2022 hail from 30 states (Welcome, Nevada!) and 14 countries, making our largest class also the most diverse in our history. Nearly 50 percent of the students in this incoming class identify themselves as diverse.

This month, my newsletter gives you a close-up look at students who just joined our remarkable University. We are proud to be the new home of a rising Broadway star, a school shooting survivor, a business major who refused to let challenges hold her back, an exceptional class of aspiring nurses as well as many transfer students who have found their new home at Adelphi.
Their excitement is infectious. For the first time, we are featuring some of their most swagged-out Instagram posts—including an Adelphi cake from our new student from Minnesota, Amber Torvund.

At Matriculation, Outstanding First-Year Student Award winner Carissa Giuliano, a physics major and researcher, ended her speech to the new class with a quote that summed up the Adelphi difference beautifully:

"At Adelphi, I am not a number. I am Carissa."

Despite our growing numbers, we will always be a school that knows your name. Enjoy reading!

Meet the Class of 2022

Find out where they're from and what they plan to study, and learn about the large numbers of transfers and graduate students who are joining them on campus.
Survivor. Leader. New Adelphi student . A deadly shooting at his middle school pushed Alex Trujillo to take leadership positions throughout high school. It also helped convince the first-year student to come to Adelphi all the way from his home in Reno, Nevada.
A star turns to Adelphi. Colby Christina is a singer, dancer and actor who's won more than 150 honors, including the AUDELCO Rising Star Award, whose past winners include Denzel Washington and Kerry Washington. Now she's accepted a new role—as an Adelphi student.
Unstoppable. First-year student Peri Finkelstein was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, but that hasn't prevented her from participating in road races, working internships at nonprofits, planning ahead for a career in law or business—and being chosen as one of Adelphi's Levermore Global Scholars.
A baseball star takes his talents to Garden City. Dominic Paolo played for the New Jersey Institute of Technology for two years, but a visit to campus for a game against the Panthers convinced him to transfer to Adelphi.
Nursing program attracts growing numbers. With America facing a shortage of nurses, first-year and transfer students are flocking to Adelphi's highly rated program—including an increasing number of men.
"I'm in—and I'm telling everybody!" Getting the good word from Adelphi's admissions office unleashed the creative instincts of future Panthers across the nation, setting off a blizzard of celebratory social media posts.
What's ahead for the Class of 2022?
Graduation day is years away, but the excitement begins now. We welcome our newest and largest class with a peek at all the ways they can get involved at Adelphi. Take a look.
Athletics Update
Panthers Prepare for Prolific Seasons
The 2018–2019 academic year felt in full swing by the time mid-August arrived, as all our fall sports teams reported back for preseason workouts. Our teams have been picked to finish high in the standings according to Northeast-10 preseason polls, and we spent Welcome Back weekend rallying around them to promote their home schedules. The Athletics Department also announced the fall promotional schedule, which started the first week of school and is peppered with giveaways and collaborations with the Center for Student Involvement. Additionally, the department earned Gold Medallion Status from LGBT SportSafe for its efforts in creating an LGBTQ+-inclusive athletics community. We're one of the first two institutions from the NE10 Conference to earn that status, placing us in the SportSafe Founder's Club.
Alumni Making a Difference
Angela Jaggar ’62, M.A. ’65
Educator, philanthropist and fierce believer in engaging Adelphi students in the nonprofit world, Angela Jaggar is helping hundreds of Panthers dive into community service through paid internships. I personally thank Angela, as do the dozens of hospitals, schools, environmental and cultural organizations that are enriched by the presence of the exceptionally dedicated Jaggar Community Fellows who serve as summer interns. We also honor her late husband, Scott, who was her partner in helping establish the program.
