TO: MSD Members
MSD is aware of a USA Today Network Delaware Editorial Board/ News Journal Editorial published online and in print in the News Journal and Delaware Online entitled, “Delaware deserves aid-in-dying. Gov. Carney must sign legislation allowing it / Our view.” Within the editorial it indicated that Delaware supports aid-in-dying legislation and that MSD would help to train physicians who were interested in the process.
To clarify, MSD adopted a position of engaged neutrality regarding medical aid in dying, which states that MSD would act as an unbiased, expert resource to physicians, patients, and legislators regarding end of life options. This is very different from the News Journal’s statement that MSD would train physicians.
MSD has since worked to have the inaccuracy removed from the online publication (refer to the July 4th article here) and continues to work on having a retraction in print. MSD President, Robert J. Varipapa, MD, has sent a letter to the News Journal clarifying MSD’s position and asking that the inaccurate statement published in the Sunday, July 7th print edition of the paper be corrected (refer to Dr. Varipapa’s letter).
