CHAIRMAN'S CORNER

Welcome to September and I hope you all have a fun and cool Labor Day weekend! After a long hot summer let’s look forward to enjoying cooler weather, football and fall. No matter what your sport or who your team is, September promises to be a fun and busy month.

As we ease into the Labor Day Weekend, I can’t help but reflect on the past year as Chairman of the Association. The first year of my term has been a fantastic experience. Donna and the staff have been exceptional to work with and it has been inspiring to see how they work every day to represent all of the Association in Tennessee and beyond. I’m excited about my second year and look forward to seeing how much more we can accomplish. The commitment that all of us have shown to be safe is a great source of pride to me and I hope to you. As the American Trucking Research Institute has just demonstrated through a wonderful research report, your membership and involvement in the Association shows how each and every one of us are trucking’s leaders.

Much as the pace of events in the world is picking up after the summer, your Association is ramping up to speed as well. The staff has been hard at work and can’t wait to see all of you at The Annual Convention in Destin September 17th through the 19th. Convention promises to be an informative and inspiring event with a great Keynote Speaker in Lt Colonel Bo McGowan, an economic update by Thom Albrecht and capped off by an address by ATA’s President and CEO Chris Spear. Finally, I’m personally excited to be able to honor Dave Manning with the Pinnacle Award for outstanding (and continuing service) to the Tennessee Trucking Association as well as the Industry nationally during the closing banquet Tuesday night. If you’ve yet to register, call Carol Foster in the office as soon as possible because the program is not to be missed!

Finally I would be remiss to not mention the other Association events that are upcoming. I hope everyone finds a Road Team Captain in Destin at Convention so that you can buy your annual TTF Raffle tickets benefitting the Foundation. There will be a Knoxville Scale visit on September 28th, as well as the South East Tennessee Big Rigs Golf Tournament in Chattanooga on Wednesday October 4th. Finally, I would encourage everyone to begin registering for the Fall Conference in Knoxville October 25th through October 27th. It will be an absolutely beautiful time of year to be in Knoxville and I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Thank you to everyone for your commitment to Safety and the Association. See you all in Destin!

SAFETY SPOTLIGHT

Avoid Road Rage

Professional truck drivers spend much more time on the road than the public. As a result, they are more likely to be confronted with aggressive situations involving other drivers. Here are six tips for avoiding or managing road rage.

Managing road rage starts with a calm and relaxed attitude. Give yourself as much time as possible to make your trip and remember that you’re going to get there anyway, so make the trip safe. Be resilient and don’t overreact to other drivers’ mistakes.

If someone makes an inappropriate gesture, cuts you off, or tries to pull you into some kind of action, don’t react. If necessary, slow down or change your route to avoid the other driver’s anger. You have no control over their behavior. However, you can manage your reaction.

If you notice the another driver starting to show signs of aggression, leave space between your vehicles and avoid eye contact. Don’t engage in the exchange of hand signs or profanity.

Lead by example and show courtesy and politeness on the road. Let your intentions be known. Use turn signals, don’t follow too closely behind the vehicle in front of you, don’t hang around too much in the passing lane, don’t hog the lane, and drive at a steady speed.

A driver who has not had enough sleep will be more irritable and may get carried away more easily. Hunger also has a negative effect on mood, ever been ‘Hangry”? Good rest and good nutrition help you stay calm in the face of bad situations on the road.

If there is a conflict and it seems it may get out of hand, call 911 immediately. Be sure to lock your doors and close your windows. Never get out of your vehicle to try to calm the person who is angry with you. Just wait for the police to arrive. Write down the vehicle’s license plate number, make, type, and color. This will greatly assist the police if the suspect leaves the scene before they arrive.

Behind the wheel - ANGER is one letter away from DANGER.

LEGISLATIVE REPORT

Tennessee Government Relations Special Update – August 31, 2023

Tennessee Legislature Wraps Up Special Session: Friction Between House and Senate, Intense Floor Sessions, and Controversial House Rules

The Tennessee General Assembly concluded its special session on public safety this week, adjourning sine die eight days after the legislature first convened on Monday, August 21. The special session had been in the works since April, when the legislature opted to wrap up the 2023 regular session in an expedited fashion, declining to deliberate some of the safety measures that Governor Bill Lee was advocating in the wake of the tragic shooting at Nashville’s Covenant School in March. As was the case in April, large crowds of demonstrators filled the Capitol and legislative office building, calling for stronger gun laws and other public safety measures. And also like April, many of the ensuing headlines dealt more with ancillary issues than legislation – such as friction between House Democrats and House GOP leadership, and treatment of spectators and demonstrators in the House galleries and committee rooms  but this session was also marked by a very public disagreement between House and Senate leadership as to the number and scope of bills that the legislature should deliberate.

MAGAZINE UPDATE

After proofreading and printing the most recent edition of Tennessee Trucking News, it came to our attention that there was incorrect information on the cover, table of contents and center spread. We stated that IMC was celebrating its 100th anniversary. They are not. IMC is celebrating its 41 anniversary and is going strong.

We regret this error and are sorry for it. In an attempt to rectify the situation, we have revised our digital edition and reprinted office copies for TTA and copies for IMC's Joel Henry who was featured on our cover. We hope that you will accept our apology for this oversight. We will strive to do better in the future.
