A message from our Guest Minister - Rev. Dr. Ben Bohren

Sunday, July 7 ~ Seventh Sunday after Pentecost ~ "Threshold Journeys"

How often do you use the word “threshold”? It’s not very commonly used, and yet our lives, physically and spiritually are filled with “thresholds…places or points between leaving and entering.” Let’s explore a few of these places—personally, nationally (it is July 4th weekend), scripturally, from an obscure First Testament reading (Habakkuk 2:1-3) and a well-known passage from Matthew 4:1-11. And of course, our beloved RUCC has been on quite a journey of thresholds in the last few years. And a big one is now before us as we welcome Pastor Joe on July 14. Who knows…a “threshold” might just materialize in our sanctuary!!

Sunday's Scripture

Habakkuk 2: 1–3;

Matthew 4: 1–11

Summer Series 2024: Spiritual Steps for Everyone

Spiritual Steps for Everyone: Exploring four of the famous twelve steps, while learning how to incorporate these transformational concepts into our daily lives.”

Dates: Saturdays: July 20, July 27, August 3, August 10

Time: 10 a.m.-noon

Food: Potluck Brunch. If you’re moved to celebrate your culinary creativity, bring a brunch-type main dish, pastry, side dish—anything that strikes your fancy! However, feel free to bring nothing at all—there will be plenty of tasty food and good fellowship to share.

Where: Covenant Hall

Age range: All ages! Older kids (those heading into 4th grade and higher) are invited to stay with the group and explore these powerful life skills for coping with daily challenges.

There will be a separate activity for all younger ages (including nursery-age) which will include a light program and a heavy reliance on PLAYTIME! The summer heat might force us to stay indoors but that doesn’t mean we can’t PLAY!

Schedule:

July 20: Step One invites us to recognize those things in our lives which are beyond our control.

July 27: Step Two invites us to understand that a Power greater than ourselves (God, the Divine, the Way, whatever you envision) is at work in our lives.

Aug 3: Step Three invites us to let go of those things which are beyond our control, and to turn them over to the Power which is greater than ourselves.

Aug 10: In Step Eleven we are invited to draw closer to the Power through prayer and meditation.

Archway leading down the path to the garden

Sacred Saturday

...will be held this week, July 6th from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. We will begin and end our day in circle in Micah Room in Mosaic Hall. This is a time for reflection, prayer, meditation and silence in community—a mini retreat. The sanctuary, both buildings, and the grounds, will be available for you for whatever your soul needs. All are invited. All are welcome. Our facilitator this month is Jessica Morgan.

Interim

In the interim following the interim

Pastor Elaine’s last day with us was June 30 and Pastor Joe’s first day on the job is July 8. For this brief period in between, we have arranged for Pastor Sarah Averette-Phillips from Live Oak (Brea) UCC to cover any pastoral needs that arise. Sarah is well-known to many in RUCC, as she grew up in this congregation, and claims Barbie and Loring Fiske-Phillips as her parents.

Sarah can be reached via email at pastor@breaucc.org or via phone/text at 909-709-5919.

Our shepherd groups are also available for support, of course, as they always are. If you don’t know which shepherd group you’re part of, please contact Shepherd Area Leader Maegan Hill at maegan@redlandsucc.org, and she’ll help you get connected.

- Dan Abushanab, President

Please note: The office will be closed until Joe’s arrival on July 8 as Veronica takes a much-deserved vacation.

Civil Rights Act

Racial Justice reflection of the week

It's been 60 years since the 1964 Civil Rights Act was signed into law.

Across the country, civil rights groups, scholars and others have commemorated the landmark law with panels, comprehensive reports and rallies. Many have cited its impact and other federal laws that came in its wake, including one protecting the right to vote for all citizens and another banning discrimination in housing.

USA TODAY invited nearly a dozen leaders of national organizations to share their take on how far the country has come since the act was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964. They also shared how far they think the U.S. has to go to achieve the full promise of the law.

Heat wave USA

From the Environmental Justice Team

“A [2020] study published...in the journal Environmental Epidemiology found that in the 297 most populous counties in the U.S., at least 5,600 deaths annually might be caused by heat. … A 2020 study in the journal Weather, Climate, and Society found that, over the last decade, heat-related deaths have increased in major metropolitan areas along the Pacific Coast among men and women over the age of 45. Several other cities in the South and Southwest have experienced a similar increase. … What’s driving the surge is unclear. The study’s authors suggest that while Americans are more aware of heat’s dangers, and air conditioning is more common than it was a decade ago, an increase in the number of heat waves may have overtaken these advances.”
