FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Severe Storms Possible in Saline County This Evening

The National Weather Service is forecasting widely scattered severe thunderstorms this evening across central Kansas.

In Saline County and surrounding areas, storms are most likely between 4 and 7 PM before shifting southeast through the evening. The main concerns are hail larger than two inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 to 70 miles per hour. Heavy downpours may also cause localized flooding.

Residents should take precautions now. Move vehicles into a garage or under cover to reduce the risk of hail damage and plan to stay indoors once storms develop, keeping away from windows and glass doors. Have multiple reliable ways to receive weather alerts throughout the evening. If heavy rain creates water over the road, especially at intersections, do not attempt to drive through it. Water is often deeper than it appears, and even a small amount can sweep a vehicle away.

Safety Tips

  • Stay off flooded roads and intersections. Heavy downpours may occur. Never drive through flooded intersections. Water is often deeper than it looks, and just a foot can carry most vehicles away.
  • Protect your property. Move vehicles into a garage or under cover to prevent hail damage.
  • Shelter indoors during storms. Stay away from windows and glass doors.
  • Have multiple ways to receive alerts. Keep weather radios, phone alerts, and trusted local sources active.
