The National Weather Service in Wichita continues to warn of multiple rounds of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affecting our area from tonight through Monday night. While some storms could become severe, with potential for golf ball-sized hail and 70 mph wind gusts, the biggest concern for Saline County remains the risk of flash flooding.
Forecast confidence has increased, and moderate to high rainfall totals are expected across much of the region. Several inches of rain may fall over the next three days, increasing the chance of street and stream flooding.
If you see water on the road, turn around, don’t drown.
Just because the vehicle ahead of you made it doesn’t mean yours will. Flooded roads are unpredictable. Six inches of water can stall a vehicle; a foot of water can carry it away.
Residents should:
- Avoid driving through flooded intersections or water-covered roads.
- Check forecasts frequently from trusted sources.
- Secure outdoor belongings ahead of high wind or heavy rain.
- Plan ahead in case weekend travel or outdoor events are disrupted.
- Sign up for alerts through trusted local notification systems.
A flood watch remains in effect for southeast Kansas, and river levels may begin to rise in the coming days, depending on how storms track.
This is not a one-and-done storm. Residents should be prepared for repeated rounds of rain through Monday night. Another update is expected Saturday morning.
